COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 2 It was very hilly; the streets weren't kept up very well. I think this was a different course than previous years, although this was my first LR Marathon. The park was nice, although I always hate direct turn-arounds. The course was poorly marked at one point and the sparse number of participants gave my group some hesitation before getting some help from a cop as to which way to go. | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 I agreed to the previous comments (T.R. from Kansas). WOW!! The medal!!! Yes, definitely worth running it. If you have to run an Arkansas to complete your 50 states, then do this one for sure. The first half, we got to see Little Rock sites, and a whole lot of Clinton, but Little Rock really doesn't have much more to see. The second half was tough. You will be busy with hills for a few miles, then a "park" with no interesting views and no radio reception. But when you see the capitol, you know you will finish soon. Be prepared - the medal is HEAVY.... Well, felt like it after a marathon. Overall, volunteers were great, friendly and helpful. Water/sports drink stops were more than I can take. Good stock of gel and fruit. Finisher's tech shirt was an extra treat. We had great day; the temperature was on the cooler side of high 20s to start, and up in the mid 50s at the finish. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was a fantastic marathon! It was well organized, the volunteers and people were friendly, the course was interesting and entertaining, and the spectators were there for the long haul. I highly recommend this race to anyone who wants to thoroughly enjoy the marathon experience. P.S. The reported "hills" were not an issue, so don't let that deter you from this fantastic event. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I didn't get a bib in my race packet when I picked it up, although I did have a chip and it scanned properly. The morning of race day I went to the registration table. I told them my name and a woman said she knew where my bib was. She walked me to a table about two blocks away where my bib was. Pretty amazing I thought. The pace-setter for the 4:00 group, Marie, was fantastic. She led a cheer and dedication every mile, kept up a constant stream of encouragement, and stopped to hug half a dozen bystanders without her pace ever faltering. Unfortunately I ran out of gas at mile 18. I saw however that John Crum from Olathe who was in our group made it all the way. Congratulations John. I had no idea that I would be getting so much support from the pace-setter and group. Little Rock spectators were very supportive. I have done the San Jose Marathon, an event in the same size range, where the spectator support wasn't nearly so strong. Some good music out on the course, particularly the African American womens' gospel group and the rock band playing Sweet Home Alabama as I went by. I think I'm going to redouble my efforts and take another shot at 4:00 in this fall. My only suggestion is to find some substitute for the out-and-back portion of the course that takes up most of the last seven miles. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 After running the big marathons in other states, I finally ran my hometown marathon and was very pleasantly surprised. With most of the big-marathon amenities, the Little Rock Marathon has significant advantages in that you have the support of fellow runners and fans without the congestion or disadvantages. This race has the best organization and amenities of any race that I have run. Perfect running weather in 2007 helped as well. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 All those who warned be about miles 14 through 16 - thank YOU! The course is definitely an uphill race for these few miles. However, with the great crowd support and aid stations at just the right places, I learned to love the challenge of those Arkansas hills. What I wish someone would have told me to prepare for was the loop from mile 19-23. This loop was frustrating because on one side of the road you are running and on the other side you being passed by those who have already made the turnaround somewhere between mile 20 and 21. For a competitor sometimes being passed on both sides toward the end of the race can be a little disheartening - particularly since there were no supporters other than our much-appreciated aid station workers along this stretch of road. But by the time I reached mile 23 I was ready to get home. There is that one last hill just before mile 25, but it's blessedly short in comparison to some of the others you've already conquered by that time. So lean in and enjoy that last challenge before the home stretch. As a newbie, I have to admit the finish line was my favorite point - I crossed and my name (first and last) was called by the emcee and he asked everyone in the bleachers to give it up for R. T. who had just completed her first marathon. Hearing those cheers and recieving the huge finisher's medal made all the training and all the effort worth it. I would definitely recommend this marathon to others. And the Perks Tent is worth the extra $20 bucks! | |

"A nice race" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 I was a little apprehensive about running this race because of the "hills." But the hills on the "half" course were very do-able - not steep, but long. It was a fun and interesting course that wound and twisted its way downtown. Spectators were fewer than expected but friendly and enthusiastic! The Little Rock police force did an excellent job with traffic control and were very encouraging. And the perks tent massage and post-race food were the best! The people of Little Rock were very friendly and our hotel - the "La Quinta" - was extremely accommodating! I was disappointed the girls' medal in the half was not "pink" as I had expected. But I'm very proud to add it to my collection. It was very easy navigating the streets of downtown, which was a plus for me. I would recommend this race and I plan to return in the future! | |

"A must-do marathon; what a way to tour New Orleans" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 The course is definitely flast and fast... a great tune-up for next week's marathon or if you're doing Ironman Arizona (Apr). I have not run this fast since I was married! Most large-city marathons route their course away from the sites and sounds... but New Orleans did it just right. The route was quite scenic: French Quarter, residential area, downtown. A good course that offers a scenic variety, EXCEPT... more port-o-johns throughout the course!!! The organization and the event staff were definitely runner-friendly! Have to say this again: more port-o-johns throughout the course!!! The "drag/cross-dressed" aid station was the best!!! I give those guys/gals accolades. The crowd and spectator support weren't much (probably recovering from Mardi Gras itself). Historically, New Orleans becomes quiet after Mardi Gras... perhaps, hosting the event before might help - only for increased spectator support. I don't know or care, but it's nice to have fans when doing a large-city, high-profile marathon (of course, not to take away from the smaller marathons - love those as well!). MORE PORT-O-JOHNS throughout the course!!! | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I just had to respond to the previous comments about the Little Rock Marathon. I am not sure if we ran the same course. I saw the Clinton Library, and the governor's mansion. I also saw a lot more, like Central High, with its moving memorial to the Civil Rights Movement. I saw many beautiful homes - one that looked like it was from the Adams Family. I saw the retired US submarine Razorback, and going on the out-and-back in the park area, I saw some great homes and heard some really great running music that was being played for us by one of the homeowners. The hills were mentioned in the race info, so they were not a surprise - and the one at 24, even though it was tough, wasn't a morale buster. Plus the finish was downhill. I will be doing it again, and have been registered for awhile for 2007. I sure want the medal; it's going to be bigger then last year. But I also want to run it because of the city and the fantastic people who put it on and cheer us on. I HIGHLY recommend it, and I have run 140 marathons. | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 Let's face it... you're probably thinking of running this race for one thing: The medal. It's definitely worth it. The thing is huge, and will be larger than any other medal you accumulate. Yes, the course is fairly hilly, but you can train for that. The course meanders around the city to see the sites fairly well, Clinton Library, governor's mansion, and, um, that's about it. Little Rock doesn't have a whole lot to see. Then there's a long out-and-back near a park where you are dying for the turnaround. The hill at mile 24 is a demoralizer, though, so be mentally prepared. The capitol is a great landmark to keep in view for reference to the finish. The temperature was perfect in '06 - mid 40s to start and warming up to near 60 for the finish. Overall a decent race, but one I won't repeat. |
