"Mile markers ruined my race" (about: 2006)

The one thing about a marathon that you have to get right is the distance. Some mile markers were less than half a mile apart while others were a mile and a half. This is a huge morale buster when you are in mile 23 and it seems like your pace is way off. There was neither food at the finish, nor spectators on the course.

This was a well organized big marathon. The start was very crowded, but the organization was good and volunteers knew what they were doing. The "new" LV Marathon is a major improvement over the "old."

Please put the mile markers in the correct spots next year. I know I didn't run a five-minute mile followed by a 12-minute mile. Other than the mile markers, this was well done.

"Vast improvements needed..." (about: 2006)

This has the potential to be a great race, but it is not there yet. The RD needs to improve in many areas.

1) Packet pickup - they need to put big board with people's numbers on them instead of us having to line up 50 people deep to get a hold of a book to find our numbers.

2) A cotton shirt for $95? Come on.

3) Start the race on time and play the national anthem so all of us can hear it.

4) The mile markers were way off for many of the miles (mile 16 - 17 took me 6 minutes according to their clocks and mile 22 - 23 took me almost 22 minutes, and I pace at 9:30 pretty consistently).

5) After the race there was no food for the runners. What is it with the race directors not being prepared for runners to finish after 4 hours with food? This is the second race in a row that happened at. Kind of ticks me off!

The good:

1) Volunteers - have not yet met a volunteer I have not liked!!!

2) The beginning of the course is fun.

3) The race announcer at the beginning did a good job.

You can run this race but do not expect a world-class product for a few more years.

"Worse than 2005" (about: 2006)

The Good: expo is large and organized, flat course, few turns, nice medal and shirt. The Bad: letting a thousand 10 minute-milers start RIGHT BEHIND the elite men. I have no idea why or how, but the corrals are unmarked and basically on the honor system, so if you are 3:30 or faster, you will hate the start. The UGLY: two years of 20+ MPH winds on a course with no wind protection, and clocks all over the course - none of which happened to be where an actual mile marker should have been. The 19 mile-marker was actually around 18 1/4, and then we went over the 30K (18.6 mile) timing pads (which had no clock, of course). The finish is also confusing. Weaving through hundreds of 1/2 marathon finishers jogging and walking the last two miles was no fun and I wasn't sure where to cross the finish line. I also heard numerous complaints from people who had a hard time getting to the start. Cabs want no part of the congestion at the start, so stay near Mandalay Bay or leave VERY early race morning. Save your $$ and run down the sidewalk free if you want to run The Strip. THIS IS NO WORLD-CLASS MARATHON.

"I was very disappointed" (about: 2006)

The start line was very disorganized. Corrals were useless, and resulted in me and my partner being placed behind so many people that we had our worst finishing time ever. We were planning to qualify for Boston with this one, but I guess we'll have to wait for the LA Marathon. The weather was cold and windy, but that of course couldn't be controlled. However, to finish the marathon, and not have one single thing to eat at the end was ridiculous. When I asked where the food was, I was told they ran out. We had a poor finishing time, but were definitely closer to the front than the back of the pack, so how did they run out? The spectators were sparse, and there were no restaurants open for spectators or marathoners to eat breakfast. Isn't Vegas open 24 hours? It's a good thing I brought my own food. I don't plan to run Vegas again. There has to be more to planning a marathon than just setting up entertainment.

"room for improvement" (about: 2006)

The expo was relatively well organized, the fireworks were fun, running up the strip in early morning was an interesting experience, the "running Elvises" and run through the wedding chapel were cute, but this marathon could use some upgrades.

The first 7 miles were interesting, but after turning out of the Freemont Street Experience, the course got quiet, desolate, cold and windy.

(I still cannot figure out how we had headwinds in every direction - not something the organizers can control, but future runners should be aware that this may be a regular occurrence in Vegas.) The views of the mountains helped a bit, but sometimes it felt like we were out in nowhere.

They had run out of gels by the time I got to both mile 18 and 22, and had run out of bananas by the time I finished (4:50). I never saw any other post-race food or beverages, so they were either hidden (and the organizers have responsibility for improving the signage) or they ran out of food, or they didn't have any.... That was quite disappointing. There was supposed to be a "finish line festival" but it really didn't feel festive, or organized.

The people running around my pace were very friendly, which helped to make up for the minimal/weak crowd support in a lot of areas. Mile marker/clocks did not seem to be accurately located at all based on my mile splits.

It feels like they tried to work out some glitches from last year, but there's still room for improvement.

"I expected more out of Vegas!" (about: 2006)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon

I guess I had higher expectations out of Las Vegas. The start of the race was all flash: Sitting on the strip, fireworks, Blue Man Group, etc. The farther you ran in the race, the less substance the race had. After mile 8 there were a few cheering spectators but nothing to really look at. The headwind was incredibly strong and cold (not to blame anyone for that). To cap it off, the finish area was the worst I have ever experienced; no organized meeting areas, no beer and no food. A town known for buffets, hospitality and entertainment certainly didn't include their marathon in on any of that. Water stations and course guides were good - thanks for the volunteers and law enforcement. Ultimately, there are better races out there to run.

"Disappointing" (about: 2006)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 2  FANS: 3

I had heard this event was "new and improved," but if it was, the old event must have been a nightmare. First, the chip packets had no cord included to attach the chip to your shoe. Next, the "wicking technical" shirt turned out to be an ugly cotton shirt. But the best/worst part were the "mile" markers that were more like mile-and-a-half markers or half-mile markers. What the heck was up with that? Mile 25 was about 3/4 of a mile and mile 24 was approximately 1.3 miles. Impossible to set a pace or know how close you were to the next split. Finally, to get to the end and have NO FOOD was really insulting. For $95, at least ONE of these basic race event essentials should have been guaranteed. Devine should be ashamed of this event. I will never run another event with which they are associated.

"Not so "Devine"" (about: 2006)

3 previous marathons | 2 Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathons

An over-priced race with minimal benefits. Not only did the 2006 version not live up to the standards of 2005, but it was flat out disappointing!

We spent that kind of money for an entry fee and only got a short-sleeve cotton t-shirt? They should have spent the money on the shirts or medals instead of the fireworks. The first couple miles are interesting and the rest are not so special. Also, poor follow-through on perks for early entry. I still do not have my "in training" t-shirt....

"At least I'll never have to run it again" (about: 2006)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon
COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 1  FANS: 1

1) The VAST majority of people did not get a confirmation card, and therefore had to look up their bib number at the expo

2) Major shortage of volunteers checking people in at the expo

3) To check a bag at the race start, they gave you a bag right before the race and wrote your number on it. And at the end, they just had all the bags laid out in rows, totally unorganized. You picked up your own, and they weren't even remotely organized by number or anything. Absolutely no security for the bags. Hideous for a race this large.

4) Mile markers were way off.

5) Getting to the starting line was a nightmare, as it was packed with people, and had no organization. This was made worse by the 6 a.m. start in the dark.

Thankfully, I was in the under four-hour group, which had tons of room. Everyone else was like sardines. The color guard couldn't even get to the starting line.

6) They promised Gu at mile 18 and 22, and actually handed it out at mile 14. I thought there must be more coming and chose to take my own at that point. and then there was nothing later.

7) Absolutely NO FOOD when I came in, a 3:45 marathoner. Just water and Gatorade. NO FOOD for a four-hour finisher.

8) The last few miles were combined with the half marathon. Therefore, the people who took 3:45 to walk 13 miles finished (walking) at the same time and place I did. And didn't stay to one
side or get out of the way of the runners. I was seriously plowing through people once I realized that the finish line was so close.

Great spectators for the first 5 miles, then almost nothing once you left the strip.
