The ambiance is great; spectators are well placed along the course - though not in every place, and that is perfect for enjoying the sight-seeing of rivers, and magnificent view of Georgetown coming out of a forest and before crossing a river!

I will do it again, no doubt. Marines are amazing; excellent support.

"Great marathon for anyone" (about: 2007)

I completed the Marine Corps Marathon in 2005, 2006 and 2007. The first thing I want to say is that the spectators were great each time. However, there are long stretches in the second half of the course where there aren't many spectators. Each time, I found these stretches to be the most difficult to get through.

The course changed a little bit from 2005 and 2006 to 2007 because of construction being done on Rock Creek Parkway.

To me, the best part (besides the finish) is right before the halfway point where the course goes through Capitol Hill and the spectators are everywhere.

I recommend this race to anyone that is looking for a big race with a lot of support.

I will definitely run this marathon again.

"Harder than I expected" (about: 2007)

This was my 2nd marathon, and although it was a great experience overall (crowd was so encouraging), be prepared for the hills (didn't know they would be as challenging on my calves) and the difficulty of running with such a big crowd. It was really tough navigating through the tight crowd, especially in areas that bottle-necked. By mile 20, my calves were so tight that I thought I might not make it (but I did). And be prepared for the hill, hair-pin turn, and even bigger hill running into the finish. Felt like I had signed up for some kind of demented boot camp.

I am glad that I did it, but once is enough for me.

"difficult race for a PR" (about: 2007)

It is a beautiful, well organized race, but it's definitely not the race for a PR. It is hilly, and in the flatter miles it is windy, e.g, Hans Point and Cristal City. The latest miles are not very scenic and the last one is truly difficult.

MCM was my first marathon and I would highly recommend it to others! It is an amazing way to see D.C., truly the Marathon of the Monuments!

The Marines are wonderful! Very supportive and will force you up "Heartbreak Hill."

Researching helped me mentally to prepare for the bridge. It was not nearly as bad as I expected. What I thought was the hardest part is when you loop back through town, I am not a fan of courses where you backtrack and can see everyone behind and ahead of you.

Great finish. Only complaint is that they rush you off to have your pictures taken before you have gone through the food and water alley.

Overall excellent race; will definitely be running it again in the future!

"Much better organized than 2006 - great job!" (about: 2007)

I did the MCM in 2006 because my sister asked me to run with her. This year was for me and about me. I expected the hills, trained for the hills and somehow survived the hills.

The spectators are second to none. They kept me going and smiling for 25.2 miles.

The last mile was a killer, and passing the finish line to have to come back to it wasn't a great feeling.

Oh well, I loved it and will do it in 2008 as well.

"Awesome race in an awesome town." (about: 2007)

I loved this race. My wife and I ran it together. We had trained with a group that ran Nike's Women, so we included a lot of hill training, which paid off. I PR'd, which made me extremely happy, considering how crowded the course was. The fan support was awesome and almost brought tears to my eyes a couple of times. By far the best marathon I've ever participated in in my brief running career.

After running the B&A Marathon in spring 2007, this was a shock. Even though I had been warned about the sheer size of the crowd, it was still amazing. I've read many others' comments about this race. For me, the whole thing was fantastic. It was very well organized, especially for the size. I had trained for the hills and was expecting them for the first 7 miles and so kept my pace down and had no problems. The whole first half was great. Met up with my wife at around mile 12 on the Mall. I also loved the Haines Point part - a lot of folks complain about that, but I felt running along the Potomac and past the Awakening statue was just beautiful. For me, the only part I didn't like was the last mile - running *past* the finish, up into Rosslyn, and then back. By then I was hurting and out of energy; and the mere thought of another gel made my stomach turn. :-) But some kids lining the route to the finish were holding out their hands for a high-five and that gave me the energy to sprint (well, sort of) up the hill to the finish. I don't know if I'll do this again, but I loved it.

I absolutely loved Marie - the 4:30 pace group leader. She was like a metronome. The course this year was more hilly than usual, which I did not like too much. But as usual, the organization and spectator support were wonderful.

"Well Organized and Nice Scenery" (about: 2007)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Marine Corps Marathon

I enjoyed most of the marathon, and got a PR. Advice if you're considering it: bring water to the start. It is a LONG walk from the metro to the start line - it must have been at least a mile. And I didn't see water available anywhere, so come prepared, and give yourself lots of time.
