"Great marathon in a great setting!" (about: 2006)

Great organization, setting, and weather! Fluid stations were well stocked for the most part and volunteers were friendly and enthusiastic. The finish line and post-race food were good. Good course with a lot of turns, and flat overall.

"This is a wonderful marathon in many ways!" (about: 2006)

What a great marathon! It is a nice race of moderate size, the volunteers were plentiful and helpful, and the course was varied. It was a bit suburban, wit a bit small-town running, sometimes an urban setting, and gorgeously beachy at various times. It was so nice to be able to park, prepare, go to the bathroom, and warm up in the warm comfortable Ocean Place Hotel before the run. We had beautiful, sunny weather this year. (Breezy, but that's the beach!) I just loved it! The race director, and organizers did an incredible job. Thanks!

"Great Marathon, Great Time" (about: 2006)

This was my first marathon ever - and I would recommend it to anybody wanting to break the ice. The spectators were great and added a Jersey flair, especially the last 1/4 mile when you are running past people cheering from sidewalk cafe's and bars down the boardwalk. I have run smaller races and never had such awesome course volunteers and even non-volunteers (the police along the way were very enthusiastic in their support too!). Talking to other runners the new course puts this marathon in the upper echelon of fun marathons!!! Way to go, Jersey!!!!

"Very fast course, but it's a loop" (about: 2006)

The course was revised this year so that one loop of the course was a half marathon so there could be a half marathon race as well. This actually worked to my benefit since I could run the course one time and on the second half, I would know what to expect. It starts by the ocean, so there's a nice breeze. Temps were nice and cool in the beginning, but it was a bit warm by the time I hit mile 20. I finished in 3:57 for a PR on a very flat course. There is an abundance of water and Gatorade stations. There aren't many spectators but that just means your friends and family can see you at the finish line easier. Having the race next to a hotel meant that people could wait inside and use the facilities, which was a plus.

"Great Course, Great Spectators, Great Volunteers" (about: 2006)

I just ran the NJM yesterday (4/30/06). What a beautiful day. The event was very well organized. The volunteers were great. Although there were not as many spectators as the NYC Marathon, they were just as great, if not better. The course was nice and flat. Highly recommended!!! Here is my big "THANK YOU" to the organizer and the volunteers!

"Great, flat, smaller marathon" (about: 2006)

I thought this was a great marathon. This was the 10th year of the race, but the first year for the new course - and I liked it.

Pluses: smaller scale makes it logistically easier to run (1,400 for the marathon, 2,000-2,400+? for the half); plenty of bathrooms, etc.; well organized; great setting with beachfront start and finish; totally flat course; I like the double loop (two 13.1-mile laps) format. We had a perfect weather day - it was clear, started in the upper 40s or low 50s, and stayed cool throughout. Minor negatives: stretches without many spectators (but good support from them!); a little windy in stretches.

"well organized marathon" (about: 2006)

I ran this earlier today. The course is nice, virtually flat (except for a couple of small bridges). A good portion of the route goes along the Atlantic coast and/or lakes, which is nice. The weather was great - upper 50's low 60's, a bit of wind at the start. I was going for Boston - needing a 3:30 - but sputtered out of the needed 8-minute pace around mile 15. I still managed a PR, knocking 15 minutes off my last one in Philly. It isn't NY, but crowd support was pretty good for a smaller marathon. Parking was difficult - especially with the 1/2 marathon starting 45 minutes before the main event. I'm glad I brought my own power gel. Though GU was advertised, it was handed out in a very low-key manner. By and large, volunteers and police were great. Obviously there are drawbacks to a 2-loop course - especially with a half being run just ahead. You really don't want to hear that you're almost there when you are at 12 miles or so and still have 14-plus to go. Also, while it wasn't a problem on most roads, traffic on Ocean Ave./Blvd. was annoying - running just next to you separated only by cones, That part was a drag. Final point: after-race refreshments were poor - warm water bottles, frozen yogurt (who wants dairy after running 26.2?), chili (???) and corn bread. There were bananas, but none of the savory/salty items I like post running - bagels, pretzels, apples, etc.

Overall, a good marathon.

"Great Small Marathon - Low Fan Turnout" (about: 2005)

Great first half of the marathon running through Sandy Hook. The second half there are very few spectators and you pass within yards of the finish line around mile 18. So from then on you are running against people who are on their way to the finish. A little disheartening when you hit the wall. Well organized and great volunteers.

"Terrific Local Marathon!! :)" (about: 2005)

NJ was an awesome marathon! The weather was perfect. Course support was great!! The medal shaped like New Jersey is a great touch. The course was scenic and flat. Great design on the long-sleeve t-shirt. Would love to see them upgrade to a tech shirt though. Would highly recommend this race!! :)

"Be thankful there are no more buses" (about: 2005)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 New Jersey Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

In almost every sense, this was a perfect event. The course is mostly flat and fast, though there's more of an ascent in the last few miles than I had anticipated. The weather, which I know has been unpredictable over the years, was very good in 2005, starting cold but warming up quickly yet never getting too hot. Spectators were avid if sparse, I didn't seem to lack for fuel on the journey and the post-race party was great: I found myself stocking back up on pasta only an hour after finishing.

The event's relatively small size (1500?) allowed for very good organization but for one key area that really upset me. Asked on several occasions about the bus to the start, organizers consistently told me it set out from 'just outside' the base hotel. This was patently untrue. The bus point was a solid mile away. At least. And by the time I got there and on board, the shorter run had started and we were detoured and held up. I ended up having NO time for pre-race stretching. In addition, I could easily have driven to the bus point had anybody been clear about how far from the hotel this departure would take place. Many other people knew about it from previous years and drove straight to the bus point; those of us walking all seemed equally confused by the long distance, so I know I wasn't the only one to be given bad info. I felt very unhappy about setting off on time early that morning and yet getting to the start line only 10 minutes before the race.

Fortunately for all first-timers, the course has changed for 2006 so you won't have this problem. Hopefully you'll just have a great, fun, fast run on a lovely sea-side course.
