"My first marathon-it was all around awesome!" (about: 2014)

Everything about this marathon was perfect. A list of some of the best parts; the humorous pre-race emails from the assistant director, the superb organization of the expo and the bus transportation, the quality purple running shirts, lots of downhills, the beautiful fall folliage, cool temps, the pre-race gathering in the warm high school with cheerleaders, music, and room to relax, the cannon blast to start the race, every participants name printed in newspaper, name called out when you cross the finish line, size of race=3000, the huge number of enthusiastic spectators in all the quaint towns along the route. I want to do this marathon again. JG age 50 race time 4:08:40

"What a fantastic race from before to after!" (about: 2014)

After sucking wind and blowing my BQ chances and quads in my first marathon (2012 Pocono Run for the Red70+ degI am not made for heat!), I signed up for Steamtown with hopes of a better experience and mostly, better weather. I AM SO GLAD I CHOSE STEAMTOWN FOR MY SECOND ATTEMPT. Jim Cummings built prerace anticipation with his incredibly witty yet informative emails. Apparently, the race committee sacrificed the proper number of chickens to arrange the most perfect weather possible for me30s and dry at the start. The official and unofficial race support along the course made the actual running pass by pretty quickly for someone who ran a 3:52. The two first aid stations on course were awesome when I needed some Advil during the trail miles. No one can make the hills at Miles 24 and 25 fun or easy, but the neighborhoods surely tried with sprinklers, food, drinks, cheering, and loud music... From the bus transport before to the yummy and plentiful food after, I was thoroughly pampered. THANK YOU!

"It's really an awesome experience at Steamtown." (about: 2014)

The spectators along the course are so kind and offer oranges, bananas, candy, supplies you might need(vaseline), they play music. Encouraging fans are everywhere giving high fives(if you want them) and at 20+ there are even more and they cheer all the louder. I came from 2 hours away and felt very welcome. The miles fly by with so much to see and hear. I enjoyed the change to a gravel woods trail at about the halfway point for a few miles. Nice on the feet. Pre-race they have a warm area to wait which is awesome when it is 36F like this year. The organizers thought of about everything. The course is mostly downhill so if you run it smart you can get a PR.

From Registration to Finish, Jim and the SMA Staff go above and beyond to make all runners feel welcome and informed! This was my 6th marathon, which is not a big deal to many, BUT, the 2014 SM surpassed all others from organization, genuine appreciation from the spectators for visiting Scranton to run, to having a warm place to stage runners prior to race time! I've run big city and small city races, but this was top notch. There is probably not a better view of foliage this side of the Mississippi in early October for a race. Kudos to all of the small town families that were out pushing the runners with genuine support and encouragement. I had an awesome local runner whose name was Lenny give me and my bud a personal tour through most of the race and helped me become a BQer. Thx Lenny, and SMA Inc. for making my weekend one I'll never forget!!

Very well organized and great job with the aid stations. Also, aside from the regular aid stations, the people of Scranton formed their own mini-aid stations. The people that came out to watch it were amazing.

I ran my third Steamtown marathon and ran another personal best on that course. (Go to the presentation Saturday afternoon to get valuable tips specific for the course. It helped me break 3 hours for the first time in my life.) The organization is awesome and friendly. Medals are great, massages are great, bag check is great, start at the high school is great, and the course is awesome: fast and gorgeous. When you ease into the race on the downhills at the beginning, take the time to enjoy those early, easy miles and the fall scenery as you drop into the valley. And then you get to run on the dirt path which is well prepared and nicely packed - my favorite section of the course. A must-do marathon!

This marathon (and I have done over 30) was one of the nicest, it was well organized, beautiful, so well stocked (water, goodies, first aid, etc), had awesome volunteers, great spectators, especially all the school kids and St Joseph kids, I could go on and on . You should be very proud of your work! You rock!!! I'll be back!

"Great race if I could just find a bathroom." (about: 2014)

Great course, but I was ill prepared for the cold weather and resulting GI issues. For 10 miles I looked for rows of Port-A-Lavs. At mile 14 I joined a line-up of men in the woods and around mile 18 I finally found nice people that let me use their basement bathroom. Now I see I should have looked for 2 Port-A-Lavs for 3,000 people, 4 at the most. My bad.
After a great time at the finish I went back a few miles looking for my friend and found him injured in a sag wagon. The driver's comments to the stranglers were most questionable. Ranging from 'this is a running event not a walking event' to 'I would have finished even if I had to crawl'. All said I loved the trail portion the most and the challenging course at the end. Thanks to all volunteers and nice people of Scranton and surrounding area.

This was my first marathon. Your race was recommended to me by others that have run it in the past. I have to say that it was even better than I had heard it was!! It amazed me every time we ran into a new town along the course! The water stations seemed to be closer together than I thought they would be and very well staffed! The fans were awesome and almost every where!! And the fans at the finish were so awesome it made me forget I was finishing a marathon and running on fumes!!! They made the last half mile feel like I was running on air! And on a serious note after it was over and we were standing around my Wife began to feel light headed. I went to one of your volunteers and asked for help and she went running and came back with 3 others. They helped get her to my truck and gave her a drink and a banana. And waited with her till I got back with the truck. We are very thankful for them taking time to help someone that was not even a runner!!! All said and done I was blown away with the day and finished almost 15 minutes ahead of my goal!!! Thanks to all involved!!

"Great Community Event" (about: 2014)

6-10 previous marathons | 2 Steamtown Marathons
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

Steamtown is a top notch event. The local community really supports the event and turns out to cheer the runners on. There are dead spots but the crowds do make it up in town sections. One town, sorry I forget the name, was a gauntlet of spectators to run through - awesome experience.

Plus the volunteers are super. Friendly and helpful. Awesome job by them. The RD's emails are funny and help build up to the race plus special requests are no problem.

Oh, the race itself. Tough on the quads - I am the walking wounded today and very sore but overall a nice course. The rails to trails section was a nice break as well.

Thanks to Steamtown for putting on a super event.
