"Great Crowds - Tough Marathon Course" (about: 2006)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Rock 'n' Roll Country Music Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 5

This is well-organized marathon with fantastic crowd support. I agree with the previous posts that it is geared more for the half marathon crowd, with a very scenic run around Music Row and a finish at the Coliseum. For out-of-town marathoners not used to Nashville, watch for the following:

1. Hills - nothing steep, but they are rolling and plentiful.
2. Humidity - it's tricky because the temps are fair and there was a strong breeze this year - but I was sweating early and fully dehydrated by mile 18.
3. Pace - the marathoners and half-marathoners run together for the first 11 miles, and it's easy to get caught up in a fast first 13 miles. Save it - the second half is tough if you haven't held back.

That being said, the organization of this race and the crowd support (particularly for the first 10 miles and the finish) is fantastic. If you are going to do the marathon, make sure you train hills, hydrate fully, and leave something in the tank for the second half.

The CMM was a great first race, although there were more hills than I thought. Made it through, but no great time. The music was fantastic, the crowd support awesome!! Also, found the town to be very runner friendly and supportive as well. I would run this race again!!

This race turned out to be a lot of fun. All of the fans and spectators that were out in full force made it that much easier to complete the competition. Country Music Marathon is a new yearly tradition.

"Don't miss this marathon!" (about: 2006)

This marathon has by far the best-quality fans I have ever experienced. Everyone seemed excited to see the runners, and all were very encouraging, especially at the later miles of the marathon when the race field thinned out. I thought the course was challenging, due to the constant rolling hills and warmer, humid weather. I trained during a cold Chicago winter, so I wasn't ready for the warmer temperatures and amount of water I needed to drink during the course. I ended up getting sick from drinking too much water. Despite all that, I still enjoyed the race very much. As a country fan, the bands through out the course were great. I would have like PowerAde at more of the water stops though. The jelly beans were a fun touch.

The start was extremely well organized. I had never experienced a corral start, and thought it was a great idea. It never felt crowded at during the race. I also liked the finish, how they kept you moving through different stations.

The shirts were nice. Nothing fancy, but I kind of liked that because it's one you can actually wear because the design isn't crazy. The medals were awesome, and very heavy!

I liked that the race was on Saturday, which gave me a chance to go out on the town the night of the race. Nashville is a very fun city with a lot to see and a great night life, so it was nice to be able to experience that.

I would recommend this race to anyone, including first-time marathoners.

My wife and I have run the half marathon of this event in 2005 and 2006. Great volunteer support and plenty of water/ade on the course. Spectators were wonderful, especially the neighborhood that completely shuts down while the runners run by. They come to the ends of their driveways and give you encouragement and have neat themes. Poker table, mimosas for runners, signs, grills, etc. Can't wait 'til 2007.

"Great marathon, but, not a PR course" (about: 2006)

This was the 2nd time I've done the full. Did the half two years ago. I love the city, especially since I live an hour away. I've run the downtown area of Nashville many times on other races and training runs. The marathon itself isn't a PR course, but well worth doing at least once. I enjoyed the greenway and Shelby Bottoms since the first half was loud and "busy." I don't think I'll ever qualify for Boston on this one, but I sure know a lot of people who do. The expo is great, but honestly, I think they should move it. Why not put it inside the Coliseum? There might be logistics there to overcome (and the fact that draft day always seems to happen on race day), but great parking there! :)

"Tough course, warm day, but nice race" (about: 2006)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Rock 'n' Roll Country Music Marathon
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

The city of Nashville and Elite Racing did a fantastic job with organizing and pulling off the race, but after training in cool to cold temperatures in Pennsylvania all winter, I was not prepared to run a marathon in 60-70 degree weather. I ran 35 minutes slower than my PR.

The Good:
- Race was very well organized from the packet pick-up, to the shuttles taking you to the corral area, to the water stations, to the finish area; I didn't really hit any glitches. I don't think many people appreciate the level of organization required to pull off this big of an event. Great job by everyone involved!
- Spectators were very enthusiastic. Normally cheerleaders annoy me, but I must admit that their energy made me smile and inspired me in the midst of a tough race. The bands were good, but I wish the music had been more upbeat. Slow ballads don't exactly get the endorphins pumping during a marathon.
-The finisher's medal is really fantastic. Nicely designed, heavy, and sharp-looking. It is my new favorite along with my 2005 Marine Corps Marathon medal.

The Bad:
- I'm not going to complain about the hills because that is just a product of local geography, but the course is very challenging. There are no really long or steep hills; just a whole lot of them. It seemed like I was always running uphill, but some of that could have been a product of me feeling like crap for over half of the race due to the temperature.

- One of the other comments posted talks about this being a half-marathon with a marathon tacked on to it. I must agree that it did feel that way at times. With the halfers outnumbering the full marathon runners by almost five to one, it did feel like the race catered more to the half-marathoners. I'm not sure what could be done about that except to start the half separately, and encourage more spectators to populate the latter stages of the course.

- Spectators were enthusiastic like I mentioned earlier, but they were sparse once the marathon course separated from the half. It got pretty lonely during those miles, and that was when I needed the support the most. I was feeling bad, and still had almost half the race to run.

- I didn't like all of the out-and-back running. It's discouraging watching people run by you and realizing that they are a mile or two ahead of you.

The Ugly:
- The goodie bag is rather pathetic considering the cost of registration. It would have been nice to have actually gotten some goodies in the goodie bag.

- The t-shirt is pretty shabby. A more nicely designed heavyweight t-shirt, a long-sleeved t-shirt, or a technical shirt would all have been preferable, and the design has no flair or personality. This needs to be improved for the next edition of the race.

- The post-race food was disappointing as well. There wasn't a whole lot of variety. I've had better food at 5K races. I got to the end and thought: is that it?

Overall:
A nice race in a beautiful and fun city. This race is definitely up and coming; there is just a bit of tweaking that needs to happen here and there. I will probably be back sometime in the future.

I have run 19 marathons and I can honestly say that this is the best organized event in which I have ever participated. From the race expo to the post-race concert, the entire event is extremely well planned. The marathoners, half-marathoners, volunteers and spectators are all taken into consideration when the event is being developed. This is the 1st time that I have run this event, but God willing, I will not miss it again.

"Great race, but don't expect a PB" (about: 2006)

3 previous marathons
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

There was nothing that I didn't like about the race - well organized, great city, lots of water, etc. That being said, I was not prepared for the hills, as I live in a very flat area. The elevation chart on the website did not do the size and amount of hills justice; however, I was able to finish, although well off my PB. Despite my disappointment at my time, I had a great time and would come again... either better prepared for hills or maybe to do the half.
