"A Good Marathon With a Huge Half" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I just ran the Country Music Marathon (CMM) today, and, as I have often criticized it in the past, I wanted to get right on and say that though it is bigger it is also better. There were almost 30,000 runners today; the half was capped at 23,000, and the marathon had over 6,000. For all that, Elite Racing has finally gotten the bugs out of its presentation. I never register until the expo, because weather can make a real difference in this late of a marathon, which is often hot and/or stormy. Registration was a breeze, if pricey, and the expo was very nice, with all sorts of free goodies. Parking, bussing, the corral start, course support, and the finish area were all great this year. I have only two small complaints: still a traffic jam getting to parking and still a cotton shirt. Otherwise, everything was great! With that huge crowd, this is really more of an event than a race, but at least it is a well-run event. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I had run the inaugural CMM in 2000, and it was the toughest marathon I had ever done. Granted, I was 195 then and 165 this past year, but the course has been leveled significantly, particularly at the end. This is my hometown marathon, so I may be somewhat biased, but this was the best organized start I have ever seen. They advance you ever 1-2 minutes depending on your predicted time, so there was no jockeying or weaving around people who cheated up to the front corral. I had done the course numerous times in training runs with the Nashville Striders, so there were no surprises. The fans were great, and rest stops were well stocked. They didn't have any Gu, though, only Sportsbeans, which I don't do; however, I was carrying my own Gu, so things worked out. One logistical problem is that the start and finish are miles apart. If you are an out-of-towner or don't otherwise arrange a ride, you either have to take a shuttle bus from the stadium, which means you are up 2 hours earlier, or you have a long walk back to your car or hotel. However, I ran the exact same pace throughout (7:28 at 10K, half-marathon, 20 miles, and the finish, and ran negative splits by a second). I also qualified for Boston by 15 mintues, so it can be done here, despite the hills. The course is more scenic than you might guess, and the last six miles are flat. If you run hills, this is a pretty good race. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Our group came to Nashville in 2005 to run Music and loved it! I will admit we are not all that hard to please. As long as we get plenty to drink and some snacks along the way, and a porta-potty every now and then, we are ok. It is about the running and being together, not the fact that the race director has everything we could possibly need at our beck and call. We liked the wave start since we are all about the same pace anyway. There were plenty of distractions along the way, such as the cheerleaders and the bands, but in the end it IS the marathon and it should be a little hard. We enjoyed everything about the race, which, by the way, was very well organized. There was plenty of everything even at the finish, which is not always the case at marathons. I was pleasantly surprised at the post-race concert - very well done, Mr. Vasser. There has been someone here from our group every year since 2005 and we will definitely be back for 2007. | |

"Run the half, not the full marathon!" (about: 2006)

COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 Good organization overall for the races; however the marathoner is really alone the second half of the race due to the fact that half is run through a non-residential area with few, if any, spectators along the course to lend support when the marathoner really needs it. The first half of the course has several rolling hills, which take a toll on even an experienced marathoner. Hopefully, the CM Marathon will have someone other than Phil Vassar sing at the post-concert this year since he has been there the last 2 years in a row. Nashville is a great bar and restaurant city so the entertainment and food options are endless. Seems to be a great half-marathon but a not-so-great marathon. -W | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 I have done the CM 1/2 Marathon three times and will be back in 2007. I am from Alabama so I train with hills and use the CMM as a bridge to train for a full marathon later in the spring. The start was a bit unorganized when Elite took over, but it seems to have improved. The beans instead of Gu or a powergel were weird, but I carried my own GU and was glad I did when I heard the complaints by other runners on the course. I get a faster time every year in Nashville, so I don't have any complaints. It's a great first race because of the number of runners, bands, and support, but also a fun race for long-time runners looking for something different. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This marathon was by far the most fun marathon I have ever run! There were plenty of water spots and port-a-potties. I am now hooked on the sport beans that were handed out during the race and in the race bags. There were plenty of rolling hills but I didn't think they were that bad, considering I had to do most of my training on a treadmill (due to living in MN, and having to do most of my training during the winter months), so it was just nice to be outside in warm weather. The bands, cheerleaders and spectators were great! Seeing Phil Vassar that night was the best concert I have been to! I really liked the fact that your bib got you into the concert free. The only thing I didn't like was the loops, because the faster runners were coming back towards you and you had no idea how far you had to run before you could head back the opposite way. Mentally that is difficult to see. Also you have to really pay attention where the full and half split off. I ran into a half-marathon runner at mile 13 who was having to turn around and go back because it split at mile 11. All in all, it was a great race, and I am coming back in 2007! | |

"Kick-Butt Course but Great Overall" (about: 2006)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was a tough course due to hills and heat. Streets are closed off and there are spectators all along the way. Cheering squads help motivate when the stretch is long and there were plenty of water stops and port-a-potties. Loved the organization at the start but especially at the finish. Only wish they would have had an Elvis to pose with at the finish photos! Nice expo too. Plenty of nice hotels and great carb-loading restaurants. If you run this marathon make sure you check out the Nashville strip. Way too much fun to miss the Crazy Horse Saloon and various souvenir shops for the must-have cowboy hat and boots! | |

There were plenty of water stations, cheering, and tons of great strangers cheering us on. I would recommend this marathon to everyone; if I can do it, you can do it. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This marathon was FUN! FUN! and more FUN! The music was great. The Hash House Harriers at MM 23.5 were a welcome sight. Everything was well organized. My only complaint was the t-shirt. For $70 I expected something better than a cheap cotton/polyester mix with a boring design. | |
