First Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This was my first marathon and I loved it. Great job across the board except for one thing, which turns out is a pretty big thing. Accelerade was the drink given out at the non-water drink stations and I must say it was quite horrific. Thick, stringy, chunky, powdery, slimy, gritty, foamy - I can't think of more descriptive words for this liquid (so-to-speak) throttler of the throat. It was very rough to get down and settled like an army tank in my gut. I often found myself chewing after drinking, which isn't pleasant after 15 miles in the heat. Next year all you race organizers and such, please for the sake of all that is right in the universe, get us something besides Accelerade. Turns out this stuff is a protein shake basically, not necessarily suited for people to consume during the run. I'm not even sure how safe that was to dispense.

Till next year...

This was my 2nd marathon. I had an absolute blast. The course was challenging but fair. There were plenty of water stations, and the spectator support was awesome.

Nashville is a great city. Plenty to do and see. I strongly advise staying in one of the hotels close to the start because the traffic is gruesome on race day.

I can only think of one negative - please get some BioFreeze or something like it in the medical tents. That would really help.

Great race!! I'll definitely do it again.

I ran the half for the second year in an row and I think the hills grew in the last twelve months. It is a scenic course that offers a great challenge. The crowd was great and there were people everywhere. The added people did not seem to be a big deal.

The one suggestion I would offer is to change the maze you have to go through to exit the finish line area. It seems to take forever to exit out and at that point all you want to do is sit down and relax.

We ran the half-marathon this year and I was amazed by how organized and well run the event was. With 30,000 runners I was expecting some problems, but the organizers of this race thought of everything and made my first race a great one. I appreciated the wave start which really helped to thin out the field. I was disappointed, however, with how many people weren't honest with projected finish times. There were WAY too many people in low-numbered corrals who should have been more toward the back of the pack. If everyone had been honest this running would have gone a little smoother and people probably would have posted some better times.

I thought the bands and crowd support were awesome. I never felt too tired or nervous about the race because there was always something to listed to or look at. Thanks to everyone who lined the course to cheer us on! I also loved the course. It was tough, but not too hard. The hills weren't really ever as bad as advertised.

I also liked the finishing area. The medical tents were great (and unfortunately needed by us) and everything was well stocked. It was overall a great event. I would definitely run the race again.

I ran CMM (full marathon) in April '07 and offer the following comments for those considering this event in the future:

POSITIVES
*Good weather (but still sunny and warm for those of us training in the North)
*Nice expo, mid-sized not too crazy
*Nashville has a great entertainment scene
*Good organization and coral system
*Nice giveaways at the finish

NEGATIVES
*mostly a 'half-marathon event'
*Tough course, many more hills than the elevation chart would lead you to believe
*The marathon course has two 'out and back' sections where you can get very de-motivated watching people miles ahead of you
*Accelerade sports drink was aweful, many, many runners experienced serious digestive issues (and lost time) due to this terrible sports drink served on the course
*This is mostly a half-marthon event, 2:1 ratio of halfs versus fulls, consider whether you want to run a marathon where 2/3 of the people drop out after 11 mles, very de-motivating
*Poorly timed water stops, some too close together, some too far apart
*Music wasn't that great
*Minimal fan support compared to other marathons, particularly after the half marathoners finish
*some very lonely and desolate stretches

This may be an OK event for a half marathoner but there are far better full marathon events and courses to run. My real areas of concern relate to the significant and numerous hills and the Accelerade sports drink (which may have you spending more time in the port-a-potty than on the course). Having run 6 marathons and numerous half marathons I would recommend looking at other options before committing to this event.

One of the best marathons that from start to finish was A+. Arizona could use some pointers on how to get it right. The expo, race, cheering fans and supporters, finisher medal and post-race activities were fantastic! The concert that evening was terrific! What a way to end a memorable marathon day. My wife and I loved it.

After not running the Boston Marathon due to being a fair weather runner, I decided to run the Country Music Marathon two weeks later. I'm so glad things worked out the way they did. It will be a day I will always remember, because it is so different than any of the other marathons that I have run - most of those being big in number and in a large city. This marathon was fairly small in size. There were approximately 6,000 marathon runners after the split with the half marathon runners at mile 11. I really enjoyed the beautiful course with many quiet surroundings when we were not listening to the 26 plus bands. Nashville is full of beautiful rolling hills with fabulous architecture. The day was great and very well organized with lots of water, etc. The day ended with a nice touch. Every participant received a free ticket to the Nashville Arena to see country super star Sara Evans. This is truly a nice way to bring everybody together and reflect on a great day. This should be a marathon that everybody should do at least once. I definitely will be back again.

This was my 5th marathon and the marathon was worth the 12-hour drive to get to Nashville. From the expo to the race to the post-race concert, everything was spectacular!! I do recommend some serious hill training; however, the hills only add to the fantastic scenery.

Just ran the '07 CM Marathon. I was blown away by how well put together this whole event was from start to finish. From the communication prior to the expo (hotel info., convention info., maps, free race day shuttles, etc.), to the great expo itself full of freebies, to an awesome race day! This marathon was outstanding! Great fan participation, great weather in TN this time of year! Let me also say the free concert ticket to see Sara Evans at the Nashville Arena was by far the best treat! Sara Evans was fantastic! Way to go Nashville! It is no surprise that this marathon has grown exponentially in such a short period of time! Watch out Boston! I will be back! Do yourself a favor and sign up for the Music City.

"Great race if you're running the 1/2!!!" (about: 2007)

6-10 previous marathons | 2 Rock 'n' Roll Country Music Marathons
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

Great race if you are doing the 1/2 but if you are doing the full... know that there are more than double the number of people running the half marathon and the course really caters to them.

This is my second time to run this race. The course has changed since the first time I ran it. I think I liked the old course better. There were a lot of out-and-backs on this route. It is hilly but for every hill there is a nice decline. There are great aid stations and a lot of them. Great bands on the first 1/2. On the second half, there aren't nearly as many bands or spectators. If they could have as much activity on the 2nd half of the course as they did the first, this would probably be one of my favorite marathons and this was #10 for me.

I definitely recommend it, but just be prepared for the last 13 miles and you'll do great!!!
