Pros: There was music occasionally; the half marathon course took runners down music row and through some nice parts of Nashville.

Cons:
1. Nowhere near enough space. Too much of the course had two-way runner traffic. This is not practical with 23,000 athletes. At certain points along music row, many runners kept bumping into and falling over each other.
2. COUNTRY Music? A quarter of the bands were not playing, 1/2 were playing rock 'n roll. Either it should more appropriately be called the "Music City Marathon" or they should play COUNTRY MUSIC at the so-called "Country Music Marathon."
3. The bussing system was complex and extremely expensive. They should use school busses to cut down the $20 transportation fee (which only transports people to the race, not to the other events). The shuttle bus didn't even stop at the Embassy Suites, which was a sponsor hotel.
4. The first several miles had no bathrooms and few trees.
5. Beer tent was cleverly hidden and only gave a single thimble-sized cup of beer. Why bother?

Three cheers to the organizers, volunteers, city managers, and all others involved to bring us this first-class event. City of Pittsburgh, PA, take notes. This is how to host a marathon.

The spirit of cooperation was everywhere. From the traffic control police officers to the aid station staffers, the fluid handlers to the finish line attendants, the many spectators to the talented musicians every mile, everyone was supportive and demonstrated Nashville's gracious hospitality. I was made to feel truly welcomed. Thanks for that.

Okay, now course analysis. The road surface was for the most part in excellent condition, with minimal crowning. Didn't stress the shins at all. We traversed urban Nashville, residential neighborhoods, light industrial complexes, rail-to-trail along the Cumberland River, and the scenic park loop late in the course. Great diversity of areas, so I don't see how boredom could latch onto a runner here. And about the time the music fades from earshot after passing a band, more follows from the next. Very inspiring.

The post-race concert was outstanding. Phil Vasser is at his best. What a phenomenally talented performer. Too many other marathon-host cities breathe a collective sigh of relief once the finish line is torn down. It's like they are thankful it's over. Marathon week was a huge success this year. Thanks, Nashville, for letting me be a part of it.

I ran the Country Music 1/2 Marathon this past Saturday, 4/29/06. It was my first and I had a great time doing so! A few comments:
1) Flawless wave start allowed us plenty of room to run.
2) Miles 1-7 offer fantastic scenery, beautiful neighborhoods, and great views of the crowds ahead of you because of the rolling hills.
3) Speaking of hills... not too bad, though the Demonbreun Hill at mile 2 and the last climb up to downtown at mile 12 are tough. The rest is flat and easy.
4) We were blessed with beautiful weather! The sun peaked out at mile 12 for me, so I am sure it was too hot for the full marathoners.
5) My only complaint: by the time I ran past the bands set up at miles 10-13, they were putting away their instruments. I run slow (10:30 pace), but there were still tons of people behind me! So it was a quiet end to the race.
6) One suggestion that worked well for us: park your car in the Coliseum parking lot at the finish line the night before.

I was pleasantly surprised. It was a great race, even for us walkers! Plenty hydration stops, great music along the way. The "wave start" was super! Nice spectators! Plenty of food after, and the free sandals were a plus! My one negative comment: No way to get from my hotel to the start. The cabs disappeared and didn't want to get close to Centennial Park. Work out this problem and you get 5 stars next year!

"Great 1/2 marathon course - low on goodies" (about: 2006)

This was my third 1/2 marathon race. I had heard a lot about the Country Music Marathon and wanted to see what the hype was all about. Nashville is a beautiful city with friendly people. The course, although hilly, is very nice and clean. I was running about in the middle of the pack. All the bands they advertised were not playing by the time I ran through. I felt sorry for the people who were farther behind me. Also, they began to run out of PowerAde and water. Very poorly planned in that respect. There were still a lot of goodies at the end of the race. The beginning of the race was well stocked with breakfast treats and plenty of potties, which is nice. The spectators are very wonderful and supportive, which helps a bunch while running. Overall, a good experience that I will do again.

This was my second time running this course and will not be my last. The course takes you through beautiful neighborhoods and parks. The down-and-back parts can be a bit crowded, but it gives us slowpokes a chance to see the leaders whiz by. The wave start is a bonus. No tripping over each other at the start. The weather was a bit hot this year, but as long as you drink early and often, it shouldn't be a problem. The spectators are great, with plenty of bands, cheerleaders and local businesses to cheer you on. The bands played all the way to the end of the course - last year they stopped playing early and switched on radios. Nice improvement. The medical staff were really on top of their game, which was good since a lot of people seemed to need them this year. Overall, I would definitely recommend this race to anyone. With a 7-hour time limit, it is great for first-timers.

First Marathon

As a first-time marathoner, I was pleased with my PR. I must say the course was incredibly challenging for the first 8 miles, but the music and crowd made it worth every penny. What an awesome experience for a first-timer. I am definitely going for another.

This marathon is getting better each year. This was my third straight Country Music Marathon. The only thing I did not like AT ALL was the jelly beans they handed out instead of Gu or other gels. Overall though, it was FANTASTIC. I live in Nashville, and this course is about as flat as a hilly city like Nashville can come up with. Nashville is a great city to visit too, with lots of sights and fun.

Nashville was my 25th state and marathon. How can a race such as this be so well thought out, but the water stops use water from hoses connected to fire hydrants? Well, they did, and it was over bleached or chlorinated to boot, and made me sick. I stopped at two gas stations to buy water because I couldn't stomach the water being dipped from the trash cans on the course. Can't you go to your water sponsor Disanti and get them to give you water for the water stops?

Positives - Great transportation to the race. The transportation from the stadium to the start line was excecuted flawlessly, but I did go early as suggested. SUPER volunteers all day! Excellent traffic control. Tons of nice people in Nasville. The town really seems to be embracing and growing this race. The half marathon is huge. Post-race food was underwhelming, but I was too sick by then to enjoy it. Still, I did get a bottle of Disanti water at the finish shute. Neat SPENCO shoes at the finish, along with a nice-looking medal.

"hard course" (about: 2006)

I just completed my first marathon. I trained all year in Florida, and the Nashville Country Music Marathon fit perfectly with my schedule. Had a great 1st 1/2 but tanked on the 2nd (4:34 finish time). I found the hills from 12-20 tough; I wasn't used to them, and had come out a little too fast in the beginning. Everyone was walking at that point (on and off), so it was hard to get re-motivated. Overall, the support was great, though I wish we could have looped back around and run the 1st half again - it had great atmosphere, live bands and a nicer route. The 2nd 1/2 was a little lonely, which made everything seem so much harder. Overall I was glad I did it. The medals and finisher support were great. If you are used to a lot of hills, then go for it; if not, then maybe it's worth sticking to the 1/2 marathon.
