"Great Marathon Experience" (about: 2006)

I just completed my first full marathon, the Country Music Marathon. I'll admit to a possible bias since I've lived here all my life but I'm trying to be objective. I've run seven half-marathons so I'm not completely without experience.

Start line was crowded with 23,000 runners in front of Centennial Park on West End Ave. Runners took off in corrals of 1,000 each about a minute apart organized by anticipated finish times. This puts the slower times and walkers at the back and helps prevent a crowded start. About two-thirds of the runners are running the half-marathon which has become the fourth largest half in the nation. To be honest, until they break away at mile eleven it is kind of crowded. All the streets are closed to traffic. Lots of porta-johns at the start and along the route. Water stops were about a mile and a half apart for the entire course. Blue cups for PowerAde and white for water. PowerGel at five and fifteen miles. Music is played by 22 bands on the course and it helps give you something different to listen to. Everything from blues, to rock, to bluegrass, and back. Medical support and organization were very good. Cool medal and shirt, and every runner gets a ticket to a great concert that night in downtown Nashville. The winners are brought out on stage and introduced, and that's pretty cool.

If I have one complaint, and its not much of one for me, it's that the marathon course narrows to about six feet-wide for two miles next to the river at the back of Metrocenter. Some people choose to start walking and that makes things worse for a while. It's not long and if there is going to be a breeze, that's where it is. Crowd support is great for the first 10 miles, with local residents handing out fruit and cheers. The crowd diminishes but never disappears for the rest of the run. The finish is at the Titans Stadium, with a separate finish for half and full marathon. The usual bagels, water, and bananas are waiting for you. It's a very well organized area.

I finished in 4:39 under partly cloudy skies and about 70 degrees. Weather in Nashville this time of year is a real crapshoot, so be prepared for anything. I am told this is a hilly course but since it's home, I don't think that much of it. I do know that I had a wonderful experience and I'll be back next year.

A well organized race. Lots of spectators. The staggered start worked exceptional well. It is certainly a race that can appeal to beginners but then with the staggered start and flat course it can also offer a PB to faster runners. One gripe was that water was given in cups rather than bottles and then there was not much water at the finish. Luckily it was overcast this year but on a sunny day I would be a little concerned. Also, there was very little food provided on the course but then loads at the finish.

"Good run" (about: 2006)

I had a good marathon run. The weather was just right. I just have a couple of issues.

At the start, I was in Corral One near the line that held the runners back from the elites. When the gun went off, the rope was still across the front of us!
Runners ran into it, some going under, some over. A lot of runners got mad.

In the future as in the past, from what I remember, just before the start, the rope is pulled and the first corral walks forward. After all, we may not be elites, but we are responsible enough not to run over the elites.

Modify the decline knee-buster/slide off the greenway. This is not safe.

First Marathon

I have never been more proud of my home city of Nashville! Every part of this race is enjoyable and well organized! The course was very interesting and the spectators were amazing! Numerous times throught the race I was energized by the support from the sidewalks! Nashville is a great city and this event mirrors the excitement and energy in this town. Come for the race; stay for the fun!

"My first half... great but hard!" (about: 2006)

This was my first half-marathon. The sheer number of participants, over 22,000, was something else. Since I was not worried about time, I had a great time. However, those who are more "into" it might not like how many people are on the roads. I was mostly impressed with how organized it was, with plenty of snacks/drinks/port-a-pots along the way. I was really thankful for the 1000s of people that lined the course to encourage us! Next year, I think I will camp out at mile 20 or so and encourage those runners. They really are minority and dang... 26.2 is really far! Thanks to Nashville and Elite Racing for a great first experience.

"Great 1/2 - course needs support for slower runner" (about: 2005)

I live in Nashville and had a great time on the course. My fiance ran/walked the 1/2 marathon, her first. She had planned on the posted water/fuel stops. By the time she got to the planned fuel stops there was nothing there. At the finish line some of the freebie post-race snacks were gone also. I agree with a previous post that for almost $100.00 there should be more freebies in your race bag; unfortunately with MORE runners in 2006 than in 2005, I wouldn't expect to see more.

Come to Nashville and have fun. The concert last year was excellent! Phil Vassar did an excellent job. It was family friendly and had a little bit of everything; country, top 40 and some rock and roll.

See you at the finish line!

Granted this was my first marathon experience (I ran the 1/2) and I'm from Nashville, but I couldn't get over the sheer number of people both on and off the course. Nearly 100,000 people clapping and cheering along the way. I was inspired and can't wait for this experience every year.

Course-wise, I don't know how much flatter it could get for Nashville. I enjoyed the route and am looking forward to experiencing new cities in the same way.

Enjoy it and try to stay an extra night or two to enjoy Nashville.

Very disappointed!!! Unfortunately their are 2 races starting at the same time and when filling out the registration their is a question asking for the approx. finish time for the marathon and the half marathon.

The reason this was an issue was because CMM had a staggered start based on finishing times, and as a result I was in the back of the 5000 pen, which I thought nothing about. I was honest with my time and it seemed after 2 - 2.5 miles that others were not. At this point, the road became 1 lane instead of 2 and I as well as others hit a logjam; we were slowed down by runners that looked a tad bit out of shape (if you know what I mean).

The other issue which really upset me was the lack of FREEBIES in my marathon bag; I paid $100.00 and got a Southwest Airlines bag of peanuts and a t-shirt.

Hmmm....How did the half-marathon medals run out? The newspaper stats the next day led one to figure there were less runners who finished the 1/2 than were registered. My husband did the 1/2 and felt awkward receiving the full medal but was told that was all that was left. We wanted to get it engraved but have been waiting to see if there'd be an exchange.
Having Elvis split us up was cool. The marathon back area by the business park was a bit lonely--could use more crowds there! Bands seemed to be tuning instruments and figuring out their numbers half the time. The one at the park (miles 22-23) was blasting real good when I went by. Maybe during their 'down times' they can have recordings of their music playing.
We really did enjoy our time in Nashville--especially the concert!! That was awesome...I didn't know the singer but he was a real party machine and very talented along with his band.
