The 2021 New York City Marathon was a celebration of the event's 50th running and a return to running post- (or almost post-) pandemic.
The men's race featured a couple of break-aways and exciting races even as the favorites failed to perform as hoped... Meanwhile, the women's race could not have been better than it ended - providing some of the best racing and results ever at New York...

Pre-Race Thoughts/Content
The New York City Marathon is one of the richest races in the world and has a commitment to putting on a newsworthy and exciting race. For the first time in years (perhaps in the history of the race), neither the men's nor the women's defending champion will be racing to retain their title and so the race will crown new champions. Nonetheless, the event is packed with superb athletes including a number of olympians and olympic medalists. On the women's side, the gold and bronze medalists (Peres Jepchirchir and Molly Seidel respectively) from the Tokyo Olympics (held on August 7, 2021) will be competing to build on their 2021 success. On the men's side, the race will feature the silver medalist from the Tokyo Olympics games - Abdi Nageeye - as well as Kenenisa Bekele, the second fastest marathoner of all time and Ghirmay Ghebreslassie, the 2016 New York City Marathon champion.
The NYC Marathon typically highlights and supports a deep American field, and for 2021 this will be especially true in the women's field. Americans running the marathon include all three of the women who made up the USA's Tokyo Marathon team - Aliphine Tuliamuk, Molly Seidel and Sally Kipyego - as well as three other women who finished within the top 10 finishers at the 2020 USA Olympic Trials Marathon.
Of course we're all excited to see the return of big-time running after the numerous cancellations due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Whatever happens, we're excited.
Here - for the elite race - you'll find full writeups on all aspects of the elite races, starter lists, past competitor lists and much more. You'll also find schedules, course information and history that are of interest to those who just want to learn more about the event.
If you're running or watching a friend/family member who is running, you'll definitely want to view and print out the pace guide which will help you know when you or your friend will arrive at the different points on the course - mandatory information [works best if you plug in your friend's race number!].

Race Preview/Starter Lists
We've separated our coverage into sections - Men's and Women's Races - and here you will find previews of what to expect as well as starter lists for each of the races.
Elite Athletes Past Performances
These men and women have met before at the marathon in various places. This page shows those races where two or more of the registered athletes have competed against each other. It's sometimes about the prior times these athletes have achieved, but it's also about how well they do head-to-head in the same race, in the same atmosphere.

In conjunction with the 2008 marathon, there was the publication of an extraordinary book and extraordinary video showing the New York City Marathon. Both were and remain excellent, so we'll reprise our writeups from the 2008 race here:
Run For Your Life (DVD)
Run For Your Life is the story of New York City Marathon founder Fred Lebow, the story of the New York City Marathon and the story of the running boom. It's compelling, interesting and humorous - and the editing is superb.

A Race Like No Other
Now available in Paperback
If you don't run the New York City Marathon and instead read Liz Robbins' book, you'll know more about the race, the people and the city than you could see in ten outings on the course (except for the feeling of hitting the wall, that can't be replicated in a book - ouch). Flawlessly written and crafted and very readable. Well done Liz.

What Others Are Writing...

We wish we had a bigger staff. We wish we could write all of the articles we'd like to write (and there are a lot of them). Fortunately, others are writing about the New York City Marathon - present and past. Here are links to Press Releases and News Articles - not written by us, but at least we've found these for you...
