What an amazing, amazing production.... It is a very well organized shore marathon with a hometown feel. With the sheer number of cheerful number volunteers, I never felt alone, even though I was doing a 6:30 marathon. The residents who came out of their homes sat on their driveways, offered water, etc. were more numerous than I've ever seen in a marathon of this size.... And they were really getting into it. With the excitement that they showed, you would think it was the highlight of their year. Long Branch has really, really taken to the NJ Marathon. And I can't wait to run the NJ Marathon again!

This is 9 of 11 NJ for me and I will keep coming until I can't run any more. The course is flat, the race organizers caring and helpful. The volunteers are great. Could use a few more spectators to help this be the best. From Lucky #13.

Great police help; nice support from bystanders; traffic safety was the best; and rest stops were well supplied. Thank you.

This was my first marathon, and I will definitely be back again next year. The volunteers were great, the fluid stations were well stocked, and it is a nice, flat course. In the places where spectators gathered, they were very supportive. The finisher's medals and hats were great too.

I loved this marathon! Tons of Gatorade and water stations. Plenty of GU and fruit to go around. Beautiful course next to the ocean. The only complaints I have is the packet pickup was a bit complicated as far as: picking up pins and bib number at one station, having to go to another area to get timing chip and get it scanned and then going to another area for a t-shirt. Very tight quarters and very busy!! Also, the ankle strap with the timing chip was bugging me by 1.5 miles and by the time I finished, I had blood all around my ankle and into my sock. OUCH!!

But... a very small price to pay for a beautiful day and great race with a PR of almost 30 minutes off of my previous marathon time!!

Overall, this marathon has to be among the best. There is a real neighborhood feel to the entire event. From the people cheering from their yards, to the community supported water/aid stations, to the forgiving course, this marathon bests the mega-marathons one finds elsewhere.

"Flat but lonely" (about: 2007)

I ran the New Jersey Marathon as my first marathon. I chose it because of all the great comments on the organization and course. The course was flat with very slight uphill. It would have been nice to have just a little more variation so your legs don't keep using the same muscles. There were way too many turns and the wind was constantly posing a challenge. I felt like I was pushing through a blanket for miles and miles. The course was also uninteresting and not much to see.

The organization was decent. For those first timers, I found the pacers a lot of help. They love to run and would love to assist anyone achieve their goals. If it were not for the pacers I met, this marathon would have been a bust for me.

The fluid stations were always plentiful. There were A LOT of volunteers. There were probably more volunteers than spectators.

The spectators were very sparse. There were only a few areas (maybe two) that had more spectator support and yet it probably took all of two minutes to get through and then you were alone again. After the 1/2 marathoners finished, which was about 70% of the runners, it was even lonelier. The runners were yards apart. If you can finish 4:30 and under, there might be more people to run with. I finished just at 5:00 and it was lonely. I'd only go back if I can't find another marathon wherein I can improve my time.

I looked for a flat and fast marathon. Though I did get that, I realized the experience as opposed to just the course is probably more important. It is such a long run not to have fun and to run alone.

"Fantastic family experience" (about: 2007)

My youngest son decided to try a marathon and, coming from NJ, choose this one. In order to encourage him and keep him on track, my two daughters, his girlfriend, and I decided to sign up for the marathon relay so we would all be "training" at the same time. Not only did two new runners find they enjoyed it, but the whole family came from all over (as well as college roommates, etc.) for an absolutely great day. We even got a non-runner to decide she'd like to volunteer next time to help at the children's activities when she saw them on Sat. Thanks so much for the opportunity. We ran to have fun and were very surprised to find we came in first in the Women's Division (even with my slow time). Now a new runner will have a trophy to remember it by - until next time....

I really enjoyed this marathon. It was my second one, but the first was fifteen years ago. The volunteers were very helpful and supportive. The roads were mostly cleared for us from traffic. There were plenty of fluid stations and the Gu was very much appreciated. The course was very flat and well marked. Spectators were very supportive throughout the race. If I were to continue racing, I would definitely do this one again. The family activities leading up to the marathon were very nice.
