"Lots of fun" (about: 2006)

My first pig run and it was great. Lots of crowd support. Loved the ladies from St. Margaret Hall nursing home!! Lots of water/gatorade, and the oranges at 2 or 3 stops were good too. The hills were a little bit tough, but not as bad as I thought they were going to be. The downhills made them seem easier.

"Most well-organized race I've participated in" (about: 2006)

I've run in three previous marathons (Chicago '04, Lakeshore '05, Columbus '05), and this one takes the cake in terms of organization & swag. The course was every bit as challenging as advertised (especially when compared to the pancake-like courses of Chicago & Columbus), but not so hard that it broke you.

The two things that stood out the most for me were the free duffel bags with the Flying Pig logo on them at the expo, and the sheer volume of the agora that was the finishing chute. Most races funnel you down a cramped path after finishing and bombard you with grub & drink. Cincinnati allowed you to meander around at the finish and grab food, drink & a shady spot to sit and wait for a friend to finish. They even gave you a bag somewhere in there to put all of your loot in!

If I can find one negative it would be the number of porta-potty's at the start...it seemed like they put so many out on the course iteself that they were 'short-seated' at the beginning.

Minor bathroom woes aside, I'd recommend this race to anyone. The city's a gracious host, the course rocks, the organizers & volunteers rock, and the spectators were out in decent numbers. This will definitely be my yearly spring-time marathon!

"Excellent marathon with a deceptive course" (about: 2006)

I think this is an excellent marathon with very good organization. From the packet pickup, aide stations on the course, to the start/finish line planning, I thought all the bases were covered properly. The City of Cincinnati really gets behind their marathon and supports it from media coverage to good/great spectator participation and support. The medal is very unique and cool, as is the neat workout bag and tech shirt you get for running the event. The course is challenging and deceptive in my view. What I mean by this is...when you look at the course elevation chart, the climb from mile 5 to 8.5 gets your attention for sure, however it appears from there on the course is 'net' downhill, however I contend the slight inclines do out number the declines the last 2/3rds of the course, making it harder in the closing miles than one might think. Being from Birmingham, I'm certainly familiar with hills..LOL..but..I found out why my Bham friends warned me this was a tough course!. But I enjoyed the course, pretty scenic, with good spectator support. First class event, I would like to come back and do The Pig again someday.

"Put the Pig on your schedule" (about: 2006)

What a fun weekend! The whole town seems to get behind the Flying Pig. There are lots of vocal spectators (many dressed as pigs or wearing pig noses) cheering you on and the course is great. There is that three mile long hill near mile 5 but it's always good to get the big hills out of the way first. Lots of aid stations, great food at the end. One thing that the Pig could improve: they never blocked off Central street at the start area. Cars were driving through until finally there were just too many people on the street. There were some close calls as the zoned out runners walked from the portajohns to the gear drop. Not good.

"Fairly challenging course, well organized" (about: 2006)

I am a veteran of nearly 50 marathons and have to say I enjoyed the early morning start (6:00 AM) in order to have cool, nonsunny conditions and, considering the early start, the race was well supported. The expo was terrific and the running clinics were entertaining and much appreciated. Even though I travelled from Steelermania central to the rival Bengal City, I must admit Cincy and the Flying Pig organizers were well worth the experience, nice finishing metal too.
I'll be back!

Last year was my first Pig and I came back to Cincinnati based on that great experience! Fantastic course with absolutely great fan support! I was not disappointed this year! I love the folks involved who think about what runners need -- a great course, plenty of liquids, closed roads, and folks out there to support you! I thought the technical shirt this year was a FABULOUS idea (NOT 'ugly' like a previous comment noted!). I will be back for Pig #3!

"PERFECT WEATHER" (about: 2006)

50+ previous marathons | 6+ Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathons
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

The day was perfect - weather was great and the volunteers were fantastic ..I will be back .
Two complaints - no venders to promote other marathons - as a member of the 50 state marathon club we are always looking for future marathons..I did not see any at the Expo -- also on the course around mile 17 there was a Cliff Shot booth handing out packs of Cliff Shot but there was no water for a good ways off - a water station was needed badly at that point ..Alot of long lines at the port-a-potties on the course ..
The Police were great and we were kept safe and the volunteers were perfect..
I have done this race seven times and I will be back..

"Great Hometown Race" (about: 2006)

1 previous marathon | 1 Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

It was a thrill for me to run this marathon on my home streets. The course was excellent. The high point for me was climbing the hill through Eden Park, especially with the overlook of the Ohio River. Hyde Park and Mariemont neighborhoods had great crowds. Eastern Avenue along the river was a good way to close out.

My family took advantage of several of the Saturday events (5K, Piglet Fun Run and Pasta Dinner). All were impeccably organized. The goodies I walked away with (medal, race shirt, bag, poster) made me feel the $55 registration fee was a great value, indeed.

I like the idea that the marathon is open to less serious runners via the relay. In practice I was a little annoyed to run with the relayers on the last leg. They trotted so comfortably, while I and the other marathoners struggled just to maintain pace.

Overall, a great mid-sized city marathon experience.

Thank you to everyone involved who put this event together. Thank you to my pace team leader Michelle who got me to the finish at my desired time. The fan support was wonderful, especially the residences of the nursing home who wheeled themselves up to the street and waved. The course was fine, the aid stations were well organized and the weather was perfect.

"A very friendly marathon" (about: 2006)

My 3rd marathon, having run Twin Cities twice previously. Some tough inclines from mile 4 to mile 10 or so, then easy from there. Great water and Gatorade stops, well staffed. Fellow runners were very nice. A friendly city. I'll run the Pig again!!!
