The hills were not as bad as I thought they would be.The rain did not stop until mile 24 by then it did not matter. Good show of people.

"Tough one to start with" (about: 2004)

The course was okay. The hills (bridges) are now at the start of the race rather than at the end. It was nice to know that the bulk of the hills were over early. The expo was fun and the organization was good. Hotels are cheaper on the KY side of the river but this only means that you have to walk a half mile to the starting line and the half mile back afterwards. (Something I had not planned for). The early start time was nice (6:30am). Great crowd support which was unexpected considering the rain and 40-degree weather. One other downside was the overcrowded start and the bottleneck at the end. I would not recommend this as your debut marathon due to the toughness of the course and because of the poor lodging options. However if you're looking for a good marathon in Ohio or KY, this is the best one.

There was good crowd support, even in the rain, but the organization was poor. Aid stations and volunteers were great, but it just wasn't too exciting.

"Poorly organized but great crowd support" (about: 2004)

This was my first marathon and a decent experience but it could have been much better.

NEGATIVES:
They ran out of t-shirt sizes so instead of a medium, I was given an extra large.
The weather was terrible this year. 3.5 hours of the race was done in rain.
WAY TOO FEW porta potties. Feces inside and around most of them with no toilet paper. My running shoes literally had crap on them from trying to use the restrooms. Lines for porta-potties were often ten minutes long. Needless to say, with two bathroom stops, this affected my time drastically.
Confusing and crowded start line. I could not find the pace groups at all.
They ran out of food and drinks at the end.
They ran out of cover ups for runners. It was freezing that day and there was no warmth to be found.

POSITIVES:
Tons of crowd support, even in the rain.
Great water/gel/food stops. There were oranges and fruit which was a GREAT idea.
Great medal.

"Best spectator support I have seen, bad organizati" (about: 2004)

A challanging, hilly course. There are rowdy spectators and bands along the entire course; it is easily the best spectator support I have seen in a marathon.

You also get great swag, a nice medal, two t-shirts, a bag and a poster.

However, organization leaves a lot to be desired. They ran out of t-shirts in our sizes, despite the fact that you request your size when you register. They also ran out of posters, but, to their credit, they were willing to mail them to us.

The finish line seriously bottlenecks into this little fenced-in area, a bizzare decision IMHO. Also, they ran out of foil blankets at the finish, which really sucked on a cold, rainy day. I was tempted to take some from the NON RUNNERS that had them >:^0, but we ended up fishing some out of the garbage. Also, the food was very far away from the finish line. Sorry, I just didn't feel like walking an extra quarter mile at the end. All these little problems piled on at the end just crushed what had been a great experience for me.

Do not do this one for a debut.

"Suggestion on routes for runners & walkers" (about: 2004)

Just something to consider. Have 2 separate courses for runner and walkers ending up at the same finish line/celebration. This would eliminate runners having to go around walkers and the walkers having to get over.

The course had some difficult hills but the scenery was great and the fans were great. It was exciting to go through the city and over the river into Kentucky. The volunteers treated the runners great too.

I won't bother to complain about the weather because looking back, the crappy weather makes for a better story later. The bad weather was more than offset by the absolutely terrific fans and course support. Despite a steady and relentless downpour, there were people lining the streets everywhere cheering and urging us on through the deluge. It was very inspiring. Thanks to all of those who came out and supported us.

The course was nice and scenic, and the support was fabulous with water and Gatorade at every mile handed out by smiling volunteers. Traffic was not a concern for the majority of the course, and let me just say that the City of Cincinnati is beautiful. The goodie bag was awesome, I especially love my backpack. It is now my race bag to take with me and show off my Pig Pride. I do agree that the finish area was crowded and disorganized, and I couldn't run through the finish because I had to come to a dead stop right at the mat. Those are the only negatives that I can point out about the race.

Overall, I loved running the Pig and would definitely do it again. Thanks to all involved for a great run!

"Thank you Cincinnati" (about: 2004)

It was cold, it was rainy, but the people are great. From the hotel clerk doing everything humanly possible to find us unprepared runners garbage bags, to the great volunteers at the water stops and between the stops to urge you on and help you out, to absolutely the best fans I've seen at any course.

You can have the nice weather; I run to meet great people and to see towns in the best possible light, and nothing beats running through the city with cheering fans lining closed streets. The finish line was a little confused, but come on, you ran 26 miles and were cold, how do you think the people standing around for hours felt. The organization made sure you got water and treats at the end. The Flying Pig was a great time all weekend. Whiners should run in a bubble with sound proofing. Thank you again Cincinnati.
