The New York City Marathon is one of the richest races in the world and has a commitment to putting on a newsworthy and exciting race. Featured in the race for 2019 are five of the top six male finishers from the 2018 race. The women's side features Mary Keitany - the women's-only Marathon world record holder - who will be going for her 5th title at New York after running the second fastest time at New York the year before. Across all of the races there will be 11 previous NYC Marathon champions, including 13 Olympians.
The NYC Marathon typically highlights and supports a deep American field, but 2019 will be weaker in that regard. With the best of America's marathoners preparing for the Olympic Trials Marathon in February, most are sitting out this late Fall Marathon. However, we are interested to watch the Americans who will be in attendance: Sara Hall (just five weeks after running a PR at the Berlin Marathon), Desiree Linden - the Boston Marathon champion and two-time Olympian; Aliphine Tuliamuk who won the USATF Running Circuit title in 2016 & 2017 and has a 2:26:50 personal best; Kellyn Taylor with her 2:24:29 personal best and ran sub-2:30 at New York in 2017; and Allie Kieffer who ran sub-2:30 in New York in both 2017 and 2018. Among the American men, we will be interested to watch Jared Ward - the 2016 Olympian; Tyler Pennell and Tyler McCandless.
Here - for the elite race - you'll find full writeups on all aspects of the elite races, starter lists, past competitor lists and much more. You'll also find schedules, course information and history that are of interest to those who just want to learn more about the event.
If you're running or watching a friend/family member who is running, you'll definitely want to view and print out the pace guide which will help you know when you or your friend will arrive at the different points on the course - mandatory information [works best if you plug in your friend's race number!].

Race Preview/Starter Lists
We've separated our coverage into sections - Men's and Women's Races - and here you will find previews of what to expect as well as starter lists for each of the races.
Elite Athletes Past Performances
These men and women have met before at the marathon in various places. This page shows those races where two or more of the registered athletes have competed against each other. It's sometimes about the prior times these athletes have achieved, but it's also about how well they do head-to-head in the same race, in the same atmosphere.

In conjunction with the 2008 marathon, there was the publication of an extraordinary book and extraordinary video showing the New York City Marathon. Both were and remain excellent, so we'll reprise our writeups from the 2008 race here:
Run For Your Life (DVD)
Run For Your Life is the story of New York City Marathon founder Fred Lebow, the story of the New York City Marathon and the story of the running boom. It's compelling, interesting and humorous - and the editing is superb.

A Race Like No Other
Now available in Paperback
If you don't run the New York City Marathon and instead read Liz Robbins' book, you'll know more about the race, the people and the city than you could see in ten outings on the course (except for the feeling of hitting the wall, that can't be replicated in a book - ouch). Flawlessly written and crafted and very readable. Well done Liz.

What Others Are Writing...
|
We wish we had a bigger staff. We wish we could write all of the articles we'd like to write (and there are a lot of them). Fortunately, others are writing about the New York City Marathon - present and past. Here are links to Press Releases and News Articles - not written by us, but at least we've found these for you...
