"Awesome race! Best Runner Support ever!" (about: 2013)

6-10 previous marathons | 2 Bryan/College Station Marathons
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

I ran this race last year and was really impressed with the organization and the after race support, but this year I wanted to try a different race, so I signed up for Dallas....then came the ice-storm. Disappointment turned into elation when I saw that the BCS race director was opening the slots from runners who had deferred this years race. WOW! I've never seen a race director reach out to cancellation affected runners from a different race. I was able to run BCS and once again I was totally impressed with how well the team communicates, how smooth the race was and how well it was supported. And the fans in College Station can't be beat by anyone. They really make you feel that they are cheering for family. Anyway, forget Dallas, next year I am coming back to BCS.

"Perfect sized marathon" (about: 2013)

6-10 previous marathons | 3 Bryan/College Station Marathons
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

I've run 9 marathons, including NYC 3 times. the big runs have great spectators but they start late and have logistical issues. Super small marathons lack many features. This marathon is perfect size. No hassle getting to start line or coral. No problems after the race concerns lines. Great level of support. Lots of volunteers. Health care provider is main sponsor with lots of MDs and nurses working aid stations. Race director provides hands on support and communication of details for runners is simply unmatched. Expo was a little weak. Only hills are about mile 12. Some areas are quite desolate concerning spectators. Beer and food afterwards is very good. Each year it gets better!

"Perfect!" (about: 2013)

The professionalism of the organization was amazing! Their desire to accomodate Dallas runners, after that marathon was cancelled, went above and beyond. Check-in ran smoothly, there was always someone to help answer questions, and the cause is awesome! I will definitely encourage others to attend in future years - it is WELL WORTH the drive!! Great job to Chris Field and his team!

"If you run only one marathon - make it this one!!!" (about: 2013)

1 previous marathon | 1 Bryan/College Station Marathon

This race is designed and planned by runners for runners. I think the t-shirt this year says 'A runner's dream' - It's true!

COURSE
I've read a few comments that the course isn't as flat as advertised. Maybe if you train only on a track. If you put in your proper hill workouts the hills on the course are minimal. I actually thought they made the course more interesting, not tougher.
My only complaint about the course was that parts of the marathon are run on the shoulder of a road with traffic going by - BUT I completely understand that they couldn't justify shutting down a lane of those roads for the (more sparsely populated) marathon course. The police along the course did a superb job of keeping the cars stopped for the runners.
Plenty of pit stops along the course - never had to wait for a port-a-potty!
The toughest miles (20-24) were run on A&M's campus and made them so much easier! And the last tenth of a mile is a straight shot downhill. Best finish ever!

SPECTATORS
It's a smaller race in a smaller city. Spectators are not going to be lining every foot of the race. You know what? I am ok with that. Running is a solitary sport anyway. And the people who are out there are some of the best, most enthusiastic supporters I've seen (especially the student groups on campus!! They were awesome!) So the quantity is lower but quality higher. =)

ORGANIZATION
This is what really puts this race over the top. Outstanding. Phenomenal. Above and beyond. 6 out of 5 stars.
The big stuff is well organized (plenty of free parking extremely close to the start/finish, tons of port-a-potties, lots of race day support, hydration stations every 1.5 miles and plenty of food along the full course).
But it's the small touches that really make it special. Name on your bib, hand painted mile markers they auction off afterward, a plastic bag *and* a styrofoam tray for all your post-race goodies and plenty of those goodies left for us slow marathoners!
The weather was touch-and-go the weekend of, with some forecasts calling for sleet, and we received regular weather updates the day before all the way until 4am. One of the race organizers even went out and drove over the overpasses in town to check for ice. Seriously.

I don't think you could find another race where the organizers care more about the runners! Truly a runner's dream!

This was my 3rd time doing the full marathon, and this race has gotten better every year. The student organization spectators were awesome, despite the cold!
