"Hilly, but VERY well organized" (about: 2006)

First time running this race, but I will return. I have never seen so many water stops and aid stations in a marathon. All volunteers were well trained and the last half mile featured the loudest cheering section of girls I have ever experienced. Runner's packet had lots of very nice goodies. Finishers medal very unique, along with a lot of uniquely dressed runners, most dressed in pig costumes. Hyde Park Township really turned out to support the event with lots of signs and spectators. Course more hilly than I anticipated; small hills seemed to pop up all along the course. Start a little slow due to large turnout, but these minor details should not distract from a very well organized race.

"Nice Event - Crowded Start" (about: 2006)

I have run this marathon 3 times. The event is well organized and the premiums and aid stations are second to none. Most of the course is very nice except for a couple of miles that are on a four-lane highway out in the middle of nowhere.

My one complaint for this event is the crowded start area. A half-marathon was added last year and there are many relay runners. Many runners do not line up according to a realistic pace, making it a real mess for the first six or seven miles. As a marathon purist, I would prefer they maintain the integrity of the event and truly make it the Flying Pig Marathon. If the desire is to add a half marathon, then use a different start time.

Compared to the previous four marathons I had completed at the time (Maui `03, Phoenix `04, Edinburgh `04, Birmingham `05) - I loved the FLYING PIG! Yes, I know it was hilly and I know I had to stay about a 20-30-minute walk to and from the race - but I think both of these things helped with a warm up before, hills to go down fast during, and a cool-down afterwards....

I have since attempted to replicate this time (4:27) at Atlanta `05 to no avail - it, too, is a great course. But for those that need the "pick-me-up," or at least to have the option of water every mile, the Flying Pig was a great race on a good day.

Being from Cincinnati you alway want to have a great home race and this race is great for that and for travelers. This race is very well organized and plays as some of the big boys. Having run New York, I think the Flying Pig stands tall against the biggies.

Exremely well organized, and well-supported by the community. A local radio station even dedicated the entire morning to play "music for runners." Decent crowd support. The best expo I have been to! I'm glad the hill is placed at the beginning, because it is a nice early challenge to get you pumped up!

This was the single best racing experience I've had - period. Since this was the very first running of the race, I couldn't believe the professionalism of the organization and the WONDERFUL job that they did! The volunteers were way beyond friendly and supportive. This is quite simply a FIRST-RATE race!!!

Some people say this course is hilly but after running Baltimore this weekend I think the Flying Pig is rolling. At least the hills are early.

Although the course was hillier than it appears on the course elevation chart, my wife and I both achieved PRs. There was one particularly nasty hill around mile 17. The view of the Ohio River was spectacular on the bridges and at mile 7-8. The Cincinnati locals were friendly, and our hotel, while in northern Kentucky, was still convenient to the start. The weather was perfect, and the volunteers were well prepared and well supplied. The live pig at mile 24 was good comic relief, and not a bad kisser! The finisher medal is the best I've have gotten. I would definitely recommend this marathon.

"My first marathon but not my last!!!" (about: 2005)

In 1989 I tried to prepare for a marathon but hurt my hamstring and thought that my body wasn't designed for marathon running. But last winter I began to train with a friend (who was very inspiring) and ran in the Flying Pig. At age 58, it's never too late! I nearly broke the 4 hour barrier, which was due probably to my initial marathon enthusiasm and the cool, beautiful weather.
I have competed in several sports, some on the national scene, but have never been in such an emotionally uplifting event such as this. We started at 6:30 AM, running through crowd-lined city streets (What were these people doing up so early?), crossed into northern KY, and then crossed back across the mighty Ohio river, which was partially shrouded in fog and sunshine, a scene I will remember for a long time. It seemed as if there were fans and runners everywhere and the supplies of water and gatorade came frequently. I was warned about the hills but I don't think that they were too bad (I train on a hilly course) since they were gradual inclines. Even though I live here, I don't think that I am too biased in recommending this marathon to everyone. I hope that they add a 90+ age bracket so that I might win something when I cross that line.

I add my compliments to the executive director and race director of the Flying Pig for a race well done. I have run all of the 'Pigs' so far and this was the year that we were blessed with the perfect weather to show off what a great job was done in preparation for this race. This race "dots the 'I's and crosses the 'T's.'" Examples include half-mile markers in the first few miles to help with the early pacing and a set of runner premiums that makes the marathon worth the price before the race is even run.

Congratulations again to all involved for a job well done.
