This ranks right up there with the Rock and Roll Marathons as far as fun and excitement! (Maybe better!) I would consider this one of the best in the U.S.!!! Great goodie bag, fantastic finisher's medal, t-shirts, towels, etc. (What didn't you hand out?!?) Very good nutritional support during and after the race. Fun expo. Even the course was perfect! Cincy running fans are the BEST!!! Special thanks to Denise Hovey and Iris Simpson Bush for putting on a great event!!!!

"Needs a little fine tuning" (about: 2005)

I ran the last several miles with Sue, the 4-hour pacer. I looked for her in the finish area to thank her and to give her a big hug. She got me to the finish line in 3:58 and am very thankful. Sue, if you see this, know how much I appreciate that you were there when I was losing it. I owe you.

The following were excellent: expo, seeing Dick Beardsley, packet pick-up, police coverage on course, entertainment and crowd support and the course layout.

The ascents were fine, and the long descents got my quads.

Some things need improvement... the baggage claim area was unsecure and uncovered. I just walked up and took my bag without anyone asking to see my number or verifying anything. Many people have nice leather bags, money inside, cameras, cell phones, etc. that could walk off and no one would be the wiser. It is ironic that last year JP from CT commented on the uncovered baggage claim area and how everything was soaked. Thank goodness it was dry this year. What's disturbing is that the race organizers did not read last year's comments in order to improve the race or did read the comments and chose to ignore them. Either scenario is not good if you seek to improve your event.

Upon crossing the finish line, both my wife and I had to seek out the person giving out the medals. JP from CT had this exact comment last year also. The finish was very anticlimactic to say the least. Quite a contrast to Akron Marathon last October where the race director met every finisher at the finish line with a handshake, congratulatory remark and a medal. Akron's advertisement of treating every runner like Bill Rodgers is accurate.

There were no signs on the course alerting you of an upcoming water stop and on which side of the road. Signs are not just good planning, but also a safety issue. When runners know a water stop is coming and on which side of the road you can plan on it and move over. Instead what actually happened was that runners were cutting across the road at the last second right in front of other runners.

Pacers were tough to locate due to the fact they carried the ballons very low. I was with a pacer and was thankful for her, but if the pacer was any distance away it was tough to spot them. I would not want to carry those balloons for 26.2 miles, but if you accept the responsibility of being a pacer you must get those balloons up to be visible.

We stayed at the Embassy Suites hotel in Covington, KY. I would highly recommend this hotel since it is near the expo, pasta dinner, walk to start, walk back from finish and they had a breakfast at 5 am for the runners.

You have to do this race once so you can say, 'I RAN THE PIG.'

Race organizers would do well to visit Akron Marathon this fall to observe all the little things Akron does. It is apparent at Akron that runners are involved with the planning. All those little things elevate an average race to a topnotch event.

"Great marathon... except for the last 385 yards" (about: 2005)

6-10 previous marathons | 2 Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathons
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This was my 10th marathon and my 2nd Flying Pig. The new course is terrific...and I did PR. But the last 385 yards should be straight. Twisting and turning does not make for a smooth finish. Running the bridges early rather than late was good course management.

I started running with the 3:10 pace team the first ten miles, but with the awesome weather and crowd support, I finished two minutes faster. Setting an even pace in the early part of a race is very critical to me. I usually go out too fast with disappointing finishing times. I'm sorry I don't know the name of the individual who paced the 3:10 runners, but he did an outstanding job. Excellent leadership through the hills, and I'm sure the whole race.

I want to thank all the volunteers, spectators and supporters who have made this a great marathon... and there were plenty of you! There were lots of oranges to be had along the course, but one more Cliff Shot station would have been great. The post-race had plenty of food and drink... even the hot dogs at the victory party were delicious.

Thanks again for a great marathon... my wife and in-laws thank you too.

"Course doesn't carry this marathon" (about: 2005)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 1  FANS: 5

This course is great, but not if you are going for a PR. It's extremely hilly throughout the marathon. However, that is part of the reason why the course is so attractive. If you are going to a marathon just to run, and don't have a time goal in mind, then this is a good choice. However, the streets are narrow and the relay and half marathoners start in the same area which makes it impossible to run for the first several miles. Aid stations need some work as well. Again, if you are looking for and enjoyable scenic race an aren't concerned about time, go for it.

"Outstanding Event" (about: 2005)

This being my 2nd marathon (Chicago '04 my 1st), I was prepared for a letdown. Well, it never happened. It was not on the grand scale of LBCM of course, but the fans made up for that. It was a beautiful course (for the most part), with great support and enthusiastic fans! My slowness (4:50) and the fact that a half was added this year, made for some dwindling supplies by the time I finished, but that was my fault. I'll be looking forward to entering again next spring!!!

All for $55: a poster, 2 t-shirts, a locker bag, Dick Beardsley at the expo, great support and entertainment on the course, a great medal, plenty of food and drink, more entertainment.

One of the best organized races; out of my last 11 marathons, this one was the best. Not my PR, but best experience and the friendliest folks.

This was my first full marathon and I was so impressed with the course, organization and most of all the spectators.

I rec'd encouragement all the way through the race from everyone and came across the Swine Line smiling.

I would highly recommend this marathon to everyone.

"Oink!" (about: 2005)

What a great race! My first marathon was NY - a regular moving country with 38,000 starters. This was much more laidback. They really seemed to care for their runners. All the course organizers TOLD you where the hills would be; when we passed them I said, 'That's it?' Lots of freebies at the end and a nice victory party.

But what makes the course are the fans. The whole community seems to come out and cheer you on. It's like 'Nice People Day'! Thanks to that guy who paced me up the hill at mile 25. And thanks to everyone at the finish, screaming like we were rock stars! That's the kind of spirit you strive for in a road race!!! LONG LIVE THE PIG!!!

Only my second marathon so not much to compare to, but I will do it again.
Awesome help from all the volunteers along the entire course. Water and port-a-potties every mile.
A good time!
