COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 4 Great course.The hills were challenging, but not too difficult. I enjoyed the crowd support and the music (the church choir at about mile 23 was inspiring). That choir kept me going when it got tough. Thanks for all the great stuff at the expo. Need a little more food variety at the finish. Overall a solid recommendation and I'll be back. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 Just ran this one. The organization was pretty good (thanks to 3500 volunteers!!!). The course was very interesting and hilly (I'm a flat-lander from Louisiana, so anything above a 5-foot rise is a hill to me). The hills are mostly in the first half of the race so most can handle them pretty well. The crowds were great and enthusiastic. Overall I thought this was a race that everyone should do at least once. Again, thanks to all of the volunteers!!! You rock!!! | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 5 After many adjustments, the new course should be a keeper - just enough hills from the beginning to keep thing interesting. The fanatics are fantastic as usual. Mehring Way is a little too narrow for over 8,000 runners at the start. The turn-around for the half-marathon is a little confusing and congested (down to a single lane). | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This is a top-tier race and you?ll come away from it with a really warm feeling. It is THAT well done. I have run many marathons and this was by far the best organized. They thought of everything; there wasn?t a detail left unattended. By far, the spacing of a water station every mile is the most extensive I have ever seen and they had LOTS of porta-potties so if you did have to go, you didn?t lose much time. There are some nitpicky things, but I feel like I?d be a whiner if I bothered with them because none affected the race or the race experience. I expected a northern city?s citizens to be jaded and aloof, but the exact opposite was the case. I guess we runners are identifiable because starting at the airport when I arrived, everyone asked if I was in town for the race and how I liked their city. There is enormous city pride and I think Cincinnati jumped through hoops to make this a great race for the runners and for the spectators. EXPO: Well, I liked it. I see the comment below but Dallas? expo sucks in comparison to Cincinnati?s and both races are the same size. The only expo I have been to that?s a jaw-dropper is Chicago, but they have 43,000 runners, too. PASTA DINNER: Nice food... and plentiful... and nice locale for the money. It is on a floating restaurant and you can look out at the Ohio River and its river traffic as you eat. Pretty cool. THE COURSE: It ain?t easy folks! It is challenging but it?s beautiful. You have 970 feet of total ascent over the 26 miles and most of it is in the first 9 miles. But it is manageable; the hills aren't the ball-busting variety, but they are long never-ending things that get your attention. You must know how to handle hill work. SUPPORT: Superb as mentioned above. Plenty of H2O and Gatorade and ALWAYS in the order of Gatorade 1st and H2O 2nd and ALWAYS in different colored cups. SPECTATORS: The citizens were out in droves and many had sweets and munchies to offer. Plus, they knew that runners need small portions to eat while running. Police and paramedics were all over the place. Enthusiastic support throughout the course. LINDALE: This is a 'burb at about mile 20. Special thanks to the folks who had PEELED orange slices for runners! Also, the 100 person-strong church choir with amps, speakers, announcer and stage was amazing. THE MEDAL: It is a really neat double-sided high relief bronze medal with the little flying piggie soaring over the Roebling suspension bridge (a local sight). Actually, the medal is ?the? reason I signed up! WEATHER: They had no control over it but it was flawless. Rather cool, clear and breezy... high 40?s to mid 50?s. Fantastic. IF YOU GO: Skip the rental car and stay downtown in Cincinnati or on the Covinton side of the river along one of the riverfront hotels. Everything you need is within easy walking distance... on either side of the river. I had a rental car and never used it, plus I paid $15 a day just to park the car. I stayed at the Sheraton, but any of the hotels would be fine... Hyatt, Millenium, etc. Stay the extra night (Monday) and go to the Reds ballgame if they're playing. Even if you aren?t a ball fan, the stadium is just superb. I spent $60 for a ticket and sat in 1st row behind the visitor?s dugout. In any other city, you?d pay $125 for the same ticket IF you could even get such a seat. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 I ran just the 1/2 marathon and I was very shocked at the amount of goodies that you get from this race. The running bag was outstanding, not one but two t-shirts, a medal and Mylar blanket were sort of unexpected. This is 2nd 1/2 marathon that I've run and matched my PR almost to the second (the other was also a hilly race). The smaller crowd was nice because we thinned out fairly quickly and had no problems passing or getting passed by others. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This is a well organized great race. The course is a bit hilly, but the enthusiastic volunteers could encourage you up Mt. Everest! Great crowd turnout, assisted by the perfect weather. Plenty of water, Gatorade, gels, and portable toilets (a big plus!). The only negative comment I have is in regard to the expo. The space is far too small and the aisles too close together. No room for two-way traffic. This short changed the exhibitors because you could not stop to talk to anyone unless you were willing to be run over by a jogging stroller. Nevertheless, I'd recommend this race to anyone. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 The 2005 Flying Pig Marathon was my first and definitely won't be my last! The entire experience was positive. The course was challenging but I was ready for it and there were no real suprises. The weather couldn't have been better! Cool and sunny...just perfect. The crowds and entertainment along the course were awesome! The miles just slipped by. I can't complain about anything. I will definitely do the Pig again and would recommend it to anyone. Thanks Cincinnati! | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 The course was beautiful (except for a couple of highway miles) and the fan support is everything it's played up to be. Water stations were plentiful and well stocked (when I got there at least). We started on time and I only witnessed flawless race organization. The huge porta-potty oasis at mile 12 was a good idea. Weather was ideal. All in all I just had a great time and a great race. It was fairly hilly, but doing some hilly training should get you through fine. I thought the T-shirt(s) were ugly, and the poster was a nice touch, except that it was just of that silly pot-bellied pig in running shoes that you saw in the ads for the race. The fancy bag that we also got as a freebie seems mighty fine. I'd recommend this marathon to anyone. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my first Pig, but definitely not my last!! The volunteers and the spectators were incredible!! I finished a little over 5 hours, and they were still cheering strong!!!! The last leg of the race could've been routed through a better area, but then again everyone is delirious the last 6 miles anyway, so I guess it doesn't really matter? Run this marathon! The sunrise over the Ohio river, the medal at the end, and the crowd support make it all worthwhile. Make sure to prep yourself for some hills, although they're nothing to be afraid of. I love Cincinnati! See you in '06, fellow PIGS!!!! |
