Valentine Marathon
February 12, 2006
Race Report by Bob Dolphin
On Sunday, February 12, 2006, the Marathon Maniacs dominated the Valentine Marathon. This race was one of Bob Green's multi-event series that started and finished in Millersylvania State Park south of Olympia (near Maytown, WA).
In addition to the marathon there was something for everyone, a half marathon, 10 mile, 10K, 5K or a 1 mile race. Most of the double out-and-back course was on Tilley Road, a rolling, scenic, rural area south of the park. One advantage of this type of course is that friends could be seen up to four times as they passed in the same or opposite direction. Being able to drop off excess clothing and gear at one's car at the halfway turn-around in the park was nice, too.
With temperatures ranging from 40-50 degrees, it was a good day for running. At the 9:30 a.m. early start it was partly cloudy and calm as we left the park. I ran with Jon Gissberg, 62, of Seattle in the early miles. By running the Valentine Marathon he maintained his string of participating in one or more marathons per year for thirty consecutive years!
Apparently I hadn't recovered fully from the Mardi Gras Marathon that I ran the previous weekend at New Orleans, Louisiana, so my run was "fair." I walked the hills and through the aid stations, walked/ran 50/50 from Miles 17-21 and walked the last five miles. I finished last overall in 5:50:51, the oldest runner and the only one in the 70+ Male Division.
There were 25 Marathon Maniacs in the group of 46 participants (54% of the total), and of great significance four of these 25 were the first two male and female winners.
Chuck Engle, 34, of Jackson, Mississippi, ran a fast pace (6:00) to finish first in an excellent time of 2:37:39. He is on a quest to see how many sub-2:50 marathons he can run in a year. So far, he has won six marathons this year and has established five new course records.
Greg Walchli, 43, of Seattle, a frequent marathon winner, came in second with a 2:53:23, and Kevin Prentiss, 43, also of Seattle, was third with a 2:59:09.
Another Seattle resident, Jennifer Yogi, 30, won the women's race with a time of 3:18:10. Van Phan, 34, of Maple Valley, another frequent winner, came in second in this race. Her time was 3:36.23. With a 3:42:30 finish Jodie Brautaset, 30, of Mt. Vernon placed third.
One of the Main Maniacs, Tony Phillippi of Tacoma, was the official photographer of the day. His pictures can be seen on the club's website, www.marathonmaniacs.com. Again, Bob Green and his crew did a great job of providing Valentine races for everyone.
