Shore to Shore Marathon
September 14, 2002
Race Report by Bob Dolphin
The Shore to Shore Marathon gets its name due to the long and narrow shape of Lake Chelan. Consequently, like a river there are two parallel shores. In this instance the marathoners ran east from Field Landing along the south shore of the lake for 18 miles to the outlet river in the city of Chelan. After a two mile tour of the river trails and the city suburbs, the course rejoined the lake shore and proceeded on the north shore to the finish area near the town of Manson.
Level running was uncommon, and there were some hills to negotiate along the way. However, only the hill in the 21st mile would be considered major. With the lake in sight most of the time there were views of the far shore, distant mountains, boats, waterfowl and forest fire smoke (this year). Along the shore there were forests, sagebrush fields and orchards. The diversity kept the runners interested throughout the race and helped with the passage of time and distance.
For the second Shore to Shore Marathon, the starting areas for the marathon and half marathon were two miles closer to Chelan. This eliminated a major hill for the marathon and had the participants running downhill from the starting line. Last year there had been a steep hill climb in the first mile.
The temperature was 60 degrees when the races started at 7:00 a.m. on September 14, 2002, and the sun was behind the hills for the first two miles. Running mostly in the shade along the south shore on a rolling, paved road, I didn't notice that it was getting warm until I ran along the unshaded shore in the 13th mile.
Instead of passing through Chelan along the shore as in 2001, we ran on river trails and through city suburbs to make up the two-mile shift in the starting area. There was a major hill as we left the city in the 21st mile. Because the race finishes at lake level, the elevation gain was reclaimed with long, coasting grades.
The marathon was won by Eric Freeberg, 36, in a time of 3:10:33. In second was Kevin Carroll, 47, of the Spokane area, with a 3:19:14. Also from that area was Connie Ridenour, 44, who ran a 3:22:29 for third overall, first woman, and first 40-44 female. Larry Carroll, 62, from the Spokane area came in fourth with a 3:28:55. He was the third male finisher and the first 60-64M. Debbie Danner, 29, (3:33:27) was fifth overall, second woman, and first 25-29F. Amy Sturtz, 35 (3:34:16) was sixth overall, third woman and first 35-39F.
My race went reasonably well. With no one in sight from Mile 6 to Mile 12 I ran alone, and I enjoyed the solitude. Lake Chelan is a great place for a natural history run. We started in a Ponderosa Pine forest and finished in sagebrush and flowering rabbit brush. Western grebes, ring-billed gulls, coots, Canada geese and mallards were on the lake. Crows, magpies, robins, Brewers blackbirds, starlings and song sparrows were along the shore and in the suburbs and orchards.
I was running fairly well in the 9-10 minute per mile range until dehydration caused some leg cramps in the last five miles. Clear skies and air temperatures in the the low 80's have this effect on me. I hobbled in with a 4:15:12 (9:45), 26th of 42 finishers and the only one in the 70-74M division.
Almost 12% of the marathon field belong to the 100 Marathon Club North America. The five members in this race were Gunhild and Jack Swanson from Spokane, Mel Preedy from Ravensdale, Bob Dolphin from Renton/Yakima, and Don Lange from Glendale, California. These five megamarathoners have collectively run more than a thousand marathons!
Don Lange, 68, ran a 6:07:33 for third 65-69M. He has a remarkable marathoning record. He is a 50 States and DC FINISHER, and has run marathons in 40 countries! Belgrade, Yugoslavia, will be the site of his next marathon. He is the first west coast runner to complete 300 marathons, and he did it in ten years!! His present count is 317 marathons. He runs approximately 35 marathons yearly, and never runs the same one twice. Don is a Washington state native and likes to come "home" to run as many marathons as he can. We were pleased that he ran the Inaugural YAKIMA RIVER CANYON MARATHON on March 31, 2001 (5:45:49). He has never been injured from running.....a record that few runners can claim.
Race director Greg Moser and his volunteers again hosted a good marathon, half marathon and a new 10K race. From Friday night's pasta feed to Saturday afternoon's award ceremony, it was a great marathon weekend.
