Race Information: SEAFAIR Marathon

Virginia Mason Team Medicine Marathon (Seafair Marathon)
July 9, 2006

Race Report by Bob Dolphin

The Virginia Mason Team Medicine Marathon (Seafair Marathon) was held at Bellevue, Washington, on July 9, 2006. This was a blessing for marathoners in the Pacific Northwest who want a local marathon in early July. In the past, travel to Calgary, San Francisco or a comparable distance was necessary to fill the void in our marathon calendar.

The weather in the Puget Sound area is usually as good as it gets in the country in early July, too. However, Bellevue may get a bit warm, but with low humidity or none at all it never seems to be as uncomfortable as it is in the Midwest or Eastern United States in the summer.

At the 7:00 a.m. start of the race 572 marathoners left the Downtown Park with moderate weather conditions, temperature in the low 60's, overcast skies and no breeze. Within an hour the temperature crept upward into the 70's, and by the time the last runners and walkers reached the finish line at the park it reached the low 80's, with clear skies and light breezes.

I tried to convince myself that this was good heat training for my upcoming Paul Bunyan Marathon at Bangor, Maine, the following Sunday on July 16th. Our Maine friends had e-mailed us to warn of possible high heat and humidity, so I appreciated the heat training at Bellevue.

The marathon course had been changed this year to eliminate two of the major hills of last year's inaugural race. There had been a downhill to Lake Sammamish and an uphill return to upland Bellevue. I liked the first 10K part of the course, most of which was new. We ran north on wooded roads and circled one of my favorite training areas, Bridle Trails State Park in Kirkland. The course followed many straight roads that were flat to rolling and had roadside trees. For an urban area this was unusual, and it provided welcome shade on a warm, sunny day.

In the 16th and 17th miles we ran along Weona Park, a trail runner's favorite, where solid tree coverage provided more shade. Then we ran up and down a few major hills before the course leveled out in the last 5K.

Because it was a loop course, most of the runners whom I know were seen in the early miles as they passed by. I caught up with Bernadette Langdon of Portland briefly in the 9th mile and then admired her power-walking style as she pulled away and went out of sight. At the time, we were surrounded by half marathon walkers, but she passed them all.

My race went fairly well. I ate gels, drank a lot of water and sports drink and often poured water over my head. The E-capsules that I consumed kept my legs from cramping. In most mile divisions I used a run/walk pattern depending on the grade and how I felt.

At the finish line I was greeted with a hug and given my finisher's medal from Lenore who had been a volunteer since 6:00 a.m. My time was 5:33:32, and I was the 515th of 572 finishers and first in the 75+ Male Division. While I consider this time to be slow, it was my fourth best of the 12 marathons that I have run in 2006.

The Seafair Marathon was won in a time of 2:25:24 by Joseph Mutinda, 31, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Kenya. In second place was Charles Nyamoki, 32, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with a 2:27:48. Uli Steidl, 34, of Shoreline, was third with a 2:28:35. Uli has had seven consecutive wins at the Seattle Marathon and many wins at the Vancouver International Marathon and other regional marathons.

In the women's race Uli's wife Trisha Steidl, 29, of Shoreline was the winner with a time of 2:59:48. Kristin Veal, 27, of Seattle was second with a 3:10:17, and Mary Hanna, 44, of Maple Valley was third with a time of 3:10:41. Mary set a new course record for women at the Yakima River Canyon Marathon on April 1, 2006, with a 2:58:06.

Congratulations to the Bruce Family Trio! Tim Bruce of Sequim and his daughters, 17 year old Jennifer and 14 year old Christina, made the Seafair Marathon a family event. Jennifer ran a PR (Personal Record) of 5:51:27 in her second marathon, and Christina, the youngest Marathon Maniac, ran her fourth marathon in an excellent time of 4:26:36.

Sam Thompson, 25, of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, ran a 3:45:42 in his ninth marathon or marathon distance in nine days. On July 2nd he began a quest to run the marathon distance every day for 50 days in all 50 states. He runs in events when available (e.g., on weekends) and otherwise on certified marathon courses to publicize and raise funds for a home building charity that concentrates on replacing homes along the Gulf Coast that were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Tony Phillippi, one of the founders of the Marathon Maniacs, was his local host and ran the race with him.

It was great to have Maniac Don "The Rev" Kienz, 51, of Exton, Pennsylvania, join us for this race. At the finish line of the Bank of America Gasparilla Marathon at Tampa, Florida, on February 26, 2006, he had performed the wedding ceremony that united Maniacs Meridith Johnson and J. Ellis. On the day before the marathon at Bellevue their vows were repeated at a party at the Ellis home in University Place (near Tacoma), and "The Rev" again officiated.

Thanks to race director Mike Ogliore, his staff and the volunteers for providing a great summer event that included the marathon, marathon relay, half marathon run/walk, and the 5K run/walk for over 3,500 participants.
