Capitol City Marathon
May 15, 2005
Race Report by Bob Dolphin
The Capital City Marathon is an event that I wouldn't want to miss. For
two decades I have enjoyed the experience, and I plan on returning to run/walk
it as long as I can. Except for our own Yakima River Canyon Marathon, I don't
know of any other marathon that Lenore and I attend where we know so many
of the runners.
In the hour before the 7:30 a.m. start on Sunday, May 15, 2005, at Sylvester
Park in downtown Olympia, Washington, it rained heavily, and socializing was
secondary to finding shelter.
At 6:00 a.m., I picked up my packet, bib and timing chip, and then we watched
the 16 early starters leave at 6:30 a.m. Janice Moyer, 48, of Wellpinit and
Carol Dellinger, 42, a Marathon Maniac (MM) of Spokane were the only ones
we knew in this group.
As we lined up for the 7:30 a.m. start, there was a downpour that didn't
last very long, and, thankfully, the weather became runner-friendly. By the
second mile the rain stopped, and the sky was overcast for the rest of the
race with air temperatures between 58 and 63 degrees. Until the direction
of the course changed, there were occasional headwinds to 15 mph.
By starting close behind the front-runners, I was able to visit with a lot
of my friends as they passed me in the first mile or two as I dropped back
in the field.
My race followed an all-too-familiar pattern. I ran fairly well for the
half marathon distance, but in the second half my running deteriorated. I
ended up walking the last 8-9 miles and finished with a lateral tilt.
My 5:33:49 chip time placed me 462nd of 485 overall. I was the oldest runner
in the race and finished in third place for the 70+ male division. Jack Swanson,
71, MM from Spokane, passed Mel Preedy, 72, MM of Ravensdale, late in the
race and held him off as he finished in 4:37:58. Mel was close behind with
a 4:39:38.
The winner of this year's Capital City Marathon was Matthew Ellis, 34, of
Tacoma who ran unchallenged with a time of 2:36:31. In second place with a
time of 2:46:32 was Mike Swan, 34, of Goleta, CA. Cliff Richards, 44, a physical
therapist from Maple Valley, finished third in 2:49:20. Cliff was the second
place finisher at the Yakima
River Canyon Marathon on April 2, 2005.
Karen Steen, 40, of Olympia, continued her dominance of the women's race
by running a 2:58:48 and winning for the seventh time in eight years. This
is a feat that stands alone! In second place was Annie Thiessen, 34, a MM
from Tacoma, who had a time of 3:13:49. Earlier this year she came in second
at our YRCM and
was the women's winner in two Washington marathons (Birch Bay and Whidbey
Island). Stephanie Matson of Portland placed third with a time of 3:15:02.
The Marathon Maniacs were well represented with 39 members running the marathon
and a few others participating in the half marathon. These runners and other
friends and acquaintances are listed in the partial results.
Our "adopted" grandson Michael Dutton, 35, MM of Everett reminded me that
this was the 76th marathon where he and I have participated together. It's
been great to have a grandson who will run marathons with me!
Congratulations to Harry Hoffman, 64, of Port Salerno, Florida (5:06:41)
a 50 state finisher who recently completed his 100th marathon.
Jim Thatcher, a Marathon Achiever of Olympia, was on hand to keep his consecutive
string of 21 Capital City Marathons going. Ron Fowler, an "Evil Triplet" from
Seattle, wore his 1983 Capital City Marathon T-shirt as he ran his 22nd CCM.
Bernadette Langdon, 51, MM, a fast walker from Portland, finished with a
time of 5:29:13 in 457th position overall. She passed me in the last mile,
looking as fresh as she did in the first mile!
The early morning downpour hadn't dampened the spirits of the runners. It
was another great Capital City Marathon, and thanks go to the director, staff
and volunteers for providing a quality marathon that was enjoyed by all who
participated.
